I think that is a reasonable assessment.

I think that there are a lot of Firebird guys that are pissed that the GTO is here, and the bird is not, as well as a lot of Camaro guys might be pissed.
I also didnt think that the GTO would fair this well. I figured it would be at least 10 votes down of the Mustang.

Voted for the pony. If spending that kind of money for a car I want the complete package and the GTO IMO drops the ball on a big part of that in the styling. I know not everybody cares but if I'm dropping 32k+ on a car I want it to LOOK the part. I don't want to be overlooked in a crowd as just "another" car. If the 05s get marked down like the 04s to 26-28k then GTO no question but as it stands the 25 or even 27k Mustang is the better car in my book.

This will be funny when the Cobra is out to see who moves to what side of the line. Will a Mustang with 50-75 more horsepower for 6-7k more than a GTO sway the GTO faithful to the Mustang side or will the increased cost push the Mustang supporters over to the GTO side. Hmmmm...

If you want the "complete package" why buy a car with a live axle instead of IRS?

It is funny you bring up the Cobra since that is more in line with the 05 GTO than the Mustang GT is. GT is Camaro territory, GTO is Cobra. I would like to see the comparison between an 04 Cobra and a GTO since both are 400 ish HP and have IRS and both cost around the same price.

The end result would be something like this
Cobra - better performance package. More raw and brute.
GTO - better package in terms of refinement, comfort, and utility.

But to be honest with you, when i think "GTO", i think G35 coupe or 3-series coupe and not "Mustang". Despite both being Rwd and offering v8 power, i don't think i'd ever cross shop the two. The same with camaro/firebird and GTO.

Probably cost, HP, IRS, and weight.

I think the GTO is closest to the '04 Cobra, from a wieght, powertrain stand point at least.

Because the live axle in the Stang seems to be more than capable of keeping up with IRS equiped cars. It has a better slalom than the GTO and I think it's also better than the last Cobra. It's more durable and it's lighter. And from all the reviews the ride doesn't seem to suffer with it back there either.
Good looking body with a more than capable live axle > dull looking body with a heavy IRS in my book.

I brought up the next Cobra simply because it will be interesting how consistent some of the arguement for and against the cars will be when the power and price are flip flopped.

That's what i think. The whole package is more brains than brawn unlike the typical pony car offering. It's more refined (like the imports) and it isn't as raw as camaro/mustang/firebird. The styling is more conservative and grown-up too just like the imports.

It's a close one. Mustang's actually ahead by 1. I think this is the first time it's actually lead in this polling.

Well, I think that's categorizing things in some sort of weird time rift.

Camaro is no longer made. The Cobra is on a break. The GTO and Mustang GT are available now.

If Camaro was still made, no doubt, it would have an LS2 and an IRS. And if it had an LS2...then why compare an '05 LS2 Camaro to an '03/'04 Mustang....and not an '05 GT? In fact, why compare an '05 GTO to an '03/'04 Mustang....yet compare an '04 GTO to an '05 Mustang...to a 2002 Camaro? Why not compare an '05 GTO to an '07 Cobra?

What's the point of comparing the current GTO to a Mustang which is no longer made? What's the point of comparing the current Mustang to a Camaro no longer made?

All fun bench racing.....but hardly valid comparisons.

Re: For the money, which would you buy? GT for 25K or GTO for 34K?

I voted for the Mustang only because a $25k-$27k '07-'08 CAMARO is what I keep hoping GM will make for me to buy. I cannot picture spending over $30k for any car for a long, long time.

GTO is the better car for sure, but the value proposition, to me, is in the Mustang's favor from my perspective. I think BOTH cars offer excellent performance and features per dollar...the Mustang is more what's in line with me though. Cloth seats, a few power goodies and a stick are the way to my heart Give me a $28k GTO with cloth manual seats and a regular CD player though, and I'd find a way to buy one tomorrow. But at $34k, for me that extra $120/month over 5 years makes too much of a difference to overcome...
