OMG I never thought that one little sentence could make me and so many people so happy. I am going to buy one brand new off the lot starting a 5th gen piggy bank now.

That's good news- I'd beter start maxing out my GM-card! Maybe when I graduate I can buy one.

If the GTO sticks around I'd forget any notion of a Firebird. Pontiac only needs one halo car and they sure won't be allowed to have two.

99SilverSS,
Thanks for the info.

Any word on a Firebird/Trans Am variant?

Any idea when we can expect an update on the 5th gen car?

Firebird debuted the sam year but the T/A didn't come out until 2 years after in 1969. And it didn't sell alot.

Though it seems Pontiac people say otherwise, I wouldn't count Firebird completely out yet. Chevrolet was about completely done with Camaro when Pontiac decided to produce the 1st gen. The cost wouldn't be very much if it was just a different nose taillights & dash, so in the end it's up to the people at Pontiac themselves.

Speaking from opinion only, the Firebird does look like it will return. But speaking only because Pontiac will have the GTO and probably the Solstice roadster, to replace the Firebird.

As for 5th Gen Camaro's returning that up to GM brass and North American Strategy Board because they write the budgets out for each year on each platform and vehicle. Its anyones guess??

99,
RE: Your above Firebird post.
I'm a bit confused. In another post you said it doesn't look good for the Firebird, but in this post you say that "does look like it will return".
Not to be a pest, but for clarification purposes, which is it, DOES or DOES NOT.
I apologize if I'm being a pest.

I would love to see two PMD muscle cars, but realistically speaking it's almost guaranteed not to happen. The GTO and f-body overlapped for about 8 years the first time around and the relationship wasn't exactly mutually beneficial, even with GM's relatively risque attitude in those days. Given how in the 90s they've been all tight-*** and fearful of any true innovation or excitement, I don't see it happening. We can all hope though. Doesn't hurt for someone (GM) to swallow their pride during unfruitful times and take cues from the competition, i.e. Ford with all their niche vehicles. Let it be known that I'm not a Ford fan, but they are successfully offering RWD niche vehicles all over the place lately with Cobra, Thunderbird, Marauder, GT40 or whatever's next.

I guess if enough dealers make a stink about not having a Firebird/Trans Am variant, GM will be forced to build them.
Look at the new Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon program.
Chevy was supposed to get the truck but not GM. The dealers made a stink and now GM is building a GMC version of it.
Hopefully the same thing happens with the Firebird.

Unfortunately, the Colorado variant will probably be one of the GMC dealer's top sales volume vehicles, where the Firebird would not...

After Sonoma is done, the GMC dealers wouldn't have anything in the huge entry level truck market... after the 4th Gen Firebird is gone... the Pontiac dealerships probably won't miss the 9 annual units they sell, or whatever the number is.

Heck, the damn dealer hardly even stock Firebird's now... I have little faith in getting help from the dealerships on this one.
