There was some talk for a while that John Heinressy wanted a 1LE package with the V6/5-speed combo on the 4th gen. Now that would have been pretty neat.

That is known as the Camaro RS. It is a V6 A4/M5 with the 1LE suspension/brakes. A friend of mine has one (M5). They were available from Chevy (through SLP) from ~'94-'2002, IIRC.

What about this possibility. In the late 80's TransAm had an anniversairy model that had Buick's Turbo V6 with intercooler which was actually faster than that year's Camaro Z28 (and was on par with Corvette in a straight line race, if memory's correct).

If Pontiac repeated history & developed it's own 5th gen once Chevrolet did all the work, should Pontiac go with a turbo (or even supercharged) V6 while Chevrolet went with a LS2 derived V8 even if there was a chance the Pontiac would be faster than Z28?

(Note: there is a history of this. Throughout the 1970s the TransAm out accelerated Z28 every year(except 75 & 76...no Z28), as did the forementioned Turbo Anniversairy TransAm.

Personally, I think if a Firebird returned, I'd like to see it somehow differentiated from the Camaro.

A turbo v6 would be a good way to do it.

MRZ, are you sure about that 1LE hardware on the SLP RS. That's the first I've heard of those pieces being offered on that.

BTW...nice HO Z/28!

The 89 Turbo TA was about a full second faster in the 1/4 , stock to stock with a 89 vette . The best STOCK et from my friends TTA so far has been 13.06@104 . Show me a stock 89 TPI vette that is that fast For comparison 89 vettes stock are low 14 second cars .

The TTA's were way underated because of ye ole' vette rule

That's not exactly true. I'm sure there are 4th gen RS guys that can chime in with more accurate data. The RS was offered from GM for '96-'97 as basically an appearance option on the V6: ground effects and spoiler add-on. I don't think there was any additional performance equipment. The "appearance package" continued to be offered on the new styled '98, but the RS designation did not return until ~'01 when the RS (and Firebird GT) were handled by SLP. This time you had more options, such as Z28 rear section, 16" ZR1s, racing stripe and maybe a few other bits.

I believe that SLP also offered an optional suspension package on the RS consisting of larger front and rear sway bars.

But as far as 5th gen Camaro goes, I think V6's can be developed to create interesting base model performance packages.

I think a base 5th gen Camaro with a 230-240hp V6, 5 or 6 speed manual, great brakes and suspension tuning would make a very desirable package.

Sort of like a current Y87 package 4th gen ..but more so.

What would you call such a package....RS?

Well all of you guys seen the new super body. It's the new Lexus coupe you've seen every now and again. Change the body and exterior alittle. Hopefully throw on a turbo and whalla, SUPRA. It's about time. GM has allot of work to do to stay competing. But if anyone can do it. GM can. They have too many sources of technology and allot of smart people to make this happen.

While we are on the subject...Nissan has recieved 8,000 pre-orders from customers for the 350Z.

I hope the 5th gen Camaro can generate that kind of excitement.

With the Mustang, the possible Charger R/T, now Supra, GM needs a 5th Gen Camaro. I don't think a turbo or supercharged 6 is the motor of choice for an American Muscle car. Keep a loud, mean V-8 N/A (maybe a supercharged edition everyonce in awhile if the Cobra keeps doing that). Stay with what the car is, don't try to make the F-body something it isn't. Im a current V-6 owner, and i'd much rather have a pushrod v-8 over a turbo charged v-6 anyday. I agree with the person that brought up the idea of the GNX. That'd be really cool to get Buick back into it.

Yeah, it does sort look retro in a Japanese sort of way.

The front end reminds me of the Toyota 2000GT of the '60s.

Whats interesting though is trying to decipher the numbers in the Japanese text.

Looks like two V6's. A base 2.5 liter and an optional 3.5...with 395hp at 7100rpm?
