The original G6 concept had a 285HP Supercharged 3.5L pushrod V6 with AWD. That is exactly what GM needed to compete with the very popular Evo, WRX, STI, and MazdaSpeed 6. AWD then could have been offered on the regular models as a $1995 option and drawn in more G6 sales and given customers one more reason to buy this car over an Altima or Accord.

As of right now, the magazines seem to like the car very much. The only question is, why buy one over one of its competitors? Unless you're a GM or American car loyalist, there isn't any clear competitve advantage to this car over others in its class.
A great car, without a doubt. But not a beater...just sort of a "meeter," at this stage.

Yet, there seems to be a problem with people spending over 30k for a Pontiac.
Who said they will be last? I dont see Nissan's SE-R becoming AWD or the Accord getting AWD any time soon? I bet you 100 bucks that the Accord and Altima outsell the STi, Evo and Mazda6.
Re: I thought the G6 GXP.....
No AWD,,,,Bummer. I guess this car won't be getting AWD either.

Re: I thought the G6 GXP.....
This car will never be an " Evo " Fighter . Its a mid Size family car weighing in as much as a F-Body . An Evo is a lightweight little econo box..did I mention how ugly it was ?
So the G6 is not even in the same catagory as the Evo . Although it is a nicer car .
I wouldnt want to 4cyl version of this pontiac though:The cars are WAY to heavy for those puny engines . GM shoulda shaved some weight off this thing .

AWD/3.5L/A4 combo is already being used in the new vans so the drivetrain parts are already there. $1995 AWD option would have been cool to have across the board on all G6's. unfortunatly to keep it cheap it would probably be automatic only.
