GM CEO Says No Chance For Pontiac G8 GXP Survival As Chevy, Caddy
It was one of very few models (maybe even the only model) whose sales didn't/haven't suffered significantly in the last 6 months. At a steady ~1500/month, it may not be a "hot" seller, but there's something to be said for a steady seller!
It also wasn't advertised enough.

and actually sales have been better lately. 2000-3000+ a month.
With pontiac dying the SLP 'firehawk' G8 will be a very low production car. Possibly lower then the 25 real firehawks.
They will be probably worth a small fortune in 20 years much like the 3rdgen firehawk, since it's the first time since then they've done serious mods.

They would probably be better off just offering the 6.0L car with a manual. Cheaper and more CAFE friendly. Mileage on the GXP is terrible. I'm not sure how different the gearing is from the Camaro.
Sounds good to me.

Great! I can't help but wonder if people are snatching them up now before Pontiac goes away.
I think I saw a few ads in car magazines, but that's not a broad enough demographic. I'm talking about prime time TV commercials or something.

TV Commercials is what I was talking about. Plus, they had a huge new years celebration on one of the channels that had the G8 all over it. I saw several ads for it.

LOL.
I started to say... The case could CERTAINLY be made to kill the Camaro in favor of the G8 based on the market alone.
Too similar... LOL.
I guess that's why Honda and Nissan only produce Altima and Accord sedans... Oh, wait....
A fantastic car, yes, but not a hot seller.
The G8 has SMASHED all expectations.
I'm aware of the percentages and the statistics and such. The bottom line is it wasn't a hot seller. It certainly is no Camaro. I think the car needed a better name to be a hot seller.
1) The Camaro name alone gives that car an edge that the G8 cannot match.
2) Chevy can sell A LOT more cars that Buick/Pontiac/GMC
3) The Camaro hasn't even been ramped up and on the market for 2 months. Almost EVERY sell right now is a goodwill sell.
I don't know how you can consider it the "best mainstream sedan in its portfolio." Is it good, absolutely. But it is also large, expensive, and doesn't get great gas mileage, which are important factors for most buying sedans. Because you like it the most doesn't mean it is the best.
