Mine happened shortly AFTER a leaking pinion seal was replaced.
You should have heard a very loud whine before that happened. VERY loud whine.

I had that happen on my 83 Z28 as I was doing 70 on the PA turnpike. Luckily it wasn't wet out and no one was next to me when the rear locked up. I was able to push in the clutch and glide to the shoulder, but the tranny was also ruined. Quite an unexpected jolt when you're cruisin' down the highway!

I had one lock up, but it was b/c of the "lock nut", which backed off and allowed the pinion to wobble and catch the posi unit.
Luckily I wasn't going very fast, though I did hit the throttle pretty hard...

Is that what is happening, or are teeth breaking and getting wedged between others?
I think a LOT of us have had this happen, it's where the nickname, "glass rearend" came from...

Sounds like the whine I get from my power steering pump when autocrossing, but just a bit deeper
