GM recalls 313,000 cars
Driver could lose control if drivewheel jams
The Associated Press
updated 1:14 p.m. ET, Fri., Dec. 21, 2007
WASHINGTON - General Motors Corp. said Friday it was recalling about 313,000 passenger cars and crossover vehicles to fix a fluid leak that could lead to the driver losing control of the vehicle.

The recall involves 275,936 vehicles in the United States, including the 2005-2007 Cadillac CTS and STS sedans, 2005-2007 Cadillac SRX crossovers, and 2006-2007 Pontiac Solstice and the 2007 Saturn Sky convertibles. About 38,000 additional vehicles are under recall in Mexico, Canada, the Middle East and Asia, GM said.

GM said the seal on the rear axle pinion, which provides power to the wheels, does not meet all specifications and could leak fluid. GM spokeswoman Carolyn Markey said the leak could lead to the drivewheel jamming up and locking while the vehicle is being driven, possibly causing the driver to lose control.

There has been one crash reported in which the rear wheels locked because of the leak and hit another car. In a separate incident, a driver reported an injury after moving around in the car as the vehicle lost control.

Markey said there have been "a higher than normal" number of warranty claims because of the problem.

The recall is expected to begin in February 2008 and dealers will replace the pinion seal free of charge. Owners may contact Cadillac at (800) 982-2339, Pontiac at (800) 620-7668 and Saturn at (800) 972-8876.

Well, look on the bright-side; at least GM didn't say - the drivers of these vehicles drove to hard and broke the seal - so......itsnotourfault.

Better to recall them than not. At least this isn't like the Ford/Firestone debacle where everyone's pointing fingers at everyone else and nobody is fixing the problem.

A GM vehicle that leaks at the pinion seal? I'm shocked

I gotta say that this year has been far better for GM recalls than in the past. This one actually jumped out at me, where as in previous years it would have barely registered as an event.

The letter I saw on it says, "A Red X study was completed on May 15, 2007 that confirmed the seal supplier made an unauthorized change to the pinion seal material."

Ouch - someone's going to be cutting a big check.

What is surprising to me, is that this did not happen sooner. There are a handful of Solstice owners that I know of whom have had their car lemon lawed because of this. GM had to buy their Sol back due to the issue happening so many times.

I've had my seal replaced once. I took it back because I needed it again but the dealer said it was fine.

Ok I said. If I blow my rear anytime soon, it's on them to replace the differential, since they seem to think it's ok.

Interesting. CTS owners have been complaining of leaking pinion seals pretty much from the beginning, so maybe this 'unauthorized change' was an attempt to improve it.
