Gas prices have been affecting the future of V8 cars since before I was even born. Present day is simply a continuation of that history.

This could effect the horsepower and base engine selection of the Camaro.

AND BY GOD WHERE IS MY 50mpg DIESEL AVEO!!! I'd buy one today. We used to have a Diesel Chevette that would blow anything out today (GM) in fuel mileage. Although, I hear rumors of the Aveo being in the works (40-50mpg).

The problem is that while gas milage has improved for basically all cars it has been offset by the fact that Americans commute farther then ever. So all those long commutes can really pinch a person wallet even though their cars are getting far better milage then the equivalent cars from the 1970's when people didnt have to commute as far to goto work.

Re: Are gas prices going to affect the future of V8 cars?

i drive less than 5 miles to work and about 30 miles to see my girlfriend. i'm pulling mid-20s in my 96 and the gas prices aren't really bothering me yet. i'd still be one of the first in-line to get a 5th gen when they come out.

i have come to terms with the fact V8s eat gas. i don't mind payin extra because i love what i drive(all my vehicles get under 20mpg besides the camaro).

i do hope the prices drop soon but all i have to do is drink less coffee, smoke less cigarettes, and spend alittle less on eating out and i'll be fine

What GM needs to do with these 28MPG V8 engines is actually advertise that on TV. Like someone said, "the American V8 with V6 gas mileage." Americans love V8's but we also love money too. I didnt know the Impala got that kind of mileage until just now, and I read this site all the time!

***HiJack alert***
(But it is gas price related)
Does anyone know if the GMT-900 trucks will have DOD on the 5.3 or any other engines? I asked this question before but no one said anything. Don't make me start a new thread for this!

I second the diesel Aveo. I was starting to think about a diesel beater, and I'd much rather get something from the General.

I'd like to see GM take a particular brand and offer diesels across the board. But, hey, one pass-car model would be a good start. I think a diesel Cobalt or Malibu Maxx would be sweet!

I'd love to get the wife into a diesel car, but there's no way in hell we're getting a VW. What we'd save in gas, we'd **** away in repair costs. No thanks.

I know the 5th gen wont have an LS4 (atleast pretty sure), but will the V-8 or V-8s even have DOD?

I bet they'll consider the LS4 for a mid-engine model now for sure.

That's what I was thinking too! There's a shop that does vw's around here, and maybe it doesn't mean much, but his lot is always full of them, in need of repair. And they always seem to be there a while, makes me think they are waitin' on parts. I love the availability of my GM parts to much. I've seen em' run, I know they can be fast, but I have other vehicles for fun. I need a good (GM) beater.

Re: Are gas prices going to affect the future of V8 cars?

I don't believe that current fuel prices will have much of an effect on the public wanting powerfull V8's.

I hope though that GM finds a way to have the F5 V8's running on 87 octane.
