Are gas prices going to affect the future of V8 cars?

5.3L Chevy Tahoe = 19mpg
Compared to SUVs, V8 cars have a long way too go before they are too expensive to drive. V8 Impalas get the same milage as many V6 cars, including the 3.9l V6 Impala
Re: Are gas prices going to affect the future of V8 cars?
I'm feeling the gas crunch in just my s/c Grand Prix. I'm sure to the average consumer, gas prices are going to create a bad image for v8s even though, as mentioned above, they have come a long way in producing higher MPG ratings. Time will tell I guess.
Re: Are gas prices going to affect the future of V8 cars?
I've heard stories about GM and Ford doing lots of testing on getting better gas mileage, and both apparently had good results. Also with the announcement of the Camaro concept in January, and calling it a possible "green friendly muscle car", wo knows what's in store....
Re: Are gas prices going to affect the future of V8 cars?
Many of today's V8 engines are very close to or equal in fuel efficency to a V6.
Even in trucks.
Look at the 2006 1500 Silverado , for example:
1500 models with Vortec 4300 V6
2WD 4-speed automatic 16/21
2WD 5-speed manual 16/22
4x4 4-speed automatic 15/18
4x4 5-speed manual 15/20
1500 models with Vortec 4800 V8
2WD 4-speed automatic 16/21
2WD 5-speed manual 16/21
4x4 4-speed automatic 15/19

6 speed + DoD LS4 + 2.73 rear might = 30mpg hwy
The 30mpg V8 muscle car... only from Chevrolet
Re: Are gas prices going to affect the future of V8 cars?
Will V8's go away? No. Because when used in car applications they can provide fuel economy almost on par with a V6 (and sad to say some "performance" I4s as well). My 99 C5 M6 is currently telling me I'm getting 26.5 MPG (mixed highway and city driving) on the first half tank of gas. Not to shabby for a 6 year old car with a couple of mild bolt ons making ~318 HP at the wheels.
Last month's C&D had a brief peek at Lexus' upcoming 500HP V8 hybrid that is supposed to feature the fuel economy of a V6.
Despite the contempt expressed by some on this board for current hybrids, they will become more common, cheaper and more importantly the technology will get better. Combine a healthy, relatively fuel efficient modern V8 like the LSx featuring displacement on demand & direct injection with a next gen hybrid motor system that lives in the rear diff and you have a recipe for a genuinely "green-er" musclecar. I'd buy it.

I saw ~30 MPG highway in my 98 Z28 M6 (stock), cruising at 65-70 on the freeway in sixth gear... around 1200rpm if I recall (at least in my C5 it's 1200); might it be coceivable that DoD would be able to turn off 4 cylinders in such a case? Around town in 100% stop/go driving where gas consumption (and hence tailpipe emissions) skyrockets, with DoD and such, I'd hope to see at least low 20s (hopefully more), rather than the upper teens as it would be with 4th gen f-cars.

Re: Are gas prices going to affect the future of V8 cars?
The only reason I'm glad I didn't get a GXP is the MPG, plus the fact I would have needed to feed it with premium. I'll be happy to pull my 24-30 MPG, 5 year old 3800 up to the pump later versus one of those beasts
I'm also driving "lighter" right now too, seeing as how gas was $2.69 yesterday, $2.89 last night, and is about $3.25 right now

Re: Are gas prices going to affect the future of V8 cars?
I think that gas prices are going to have an effect. We may be about to enter a time where north americans will focus more on fuel efficiency, like they did in the early 70's. I have a feeling that there will soon be alot less average middle class people willing to purchase or lease gas guzzler suv's, or v8 cars (whether or not they truly are gas guzzlers). Look around you, everyone seems to be in a panic about gas prices and their budgets. It's going to have an impact.
Re: Are gas prices going to affect the future of V8 cars?
Gas prices will drop mark my word, some time in the next 2 weeks they will. Once the 2 main pipelines are up and working, prices will drop. It is really nieve of you to think that gas will never again be below $2.50
