F5 base engine
F5 base engine
The new July motortrend has a little article about the Malibu Maxx and they talk about the Malibu Maxx SS having a 3.9L OHV V6 putting out 245HP
This 3.9L pushrod V6 would make the perfect base engine for the next Camaro. 245HP would keep it very competative with the RSX, Eclipes, and next Mustang. 0-60 in mid 6 sec.
keeping it pushrod will also give GM a pricing advatage over the others with DOHC engines.

Sounds like an okay choice for a base engine in a Camaro (I'd like the OHC, even if it did cost a little more).
However it sounds disapointing as a Super Sport Malibu engine. It's got what, 5HP on your basic V6 Altima? I hope they will at least stick a good 5 or 6 speed on it.

I think the 3.9 is about the only choice we have for a base engine. If you accept that the V8 is going to be an LS1 derivative (i.e. OHV), then you can be sure GM is going to design the engine compartment around such an engine. This would mean largish strut towers and a low, swoopy hood. I can't see any OHC engine fitting in such a place. Also, cost is big factor is a base engine-- the high-feature V6 probably costs more to make than an LS1.

I'd rather have the new base V6 from the CTS. 3.6L DOHC 260hp I think it will be.

Or hell, just the I6 would be fine, at LT1 #s, it aint bad for a base

***** to a V6 in an f-body... give us an OHC I6! it's not like there isn't enough room to fit one in a camaro or a firechicken style of car... and it's a superior design in almost every respect
I don't think there will be enough room for an I6. The 4.2 in the Trailblazer is very long and from what I have heard, will not really fit in much else. I would be very surprised if they had that as the base engine, but it would be nice. The more I think about it, the more I think the DOHC 3.6 may have a case. It is more expensive but GM might try to dispell the image that a Camaro has for being "crude" and not technologically advanced. This could be good for people who need to have that DOHC on the engine before they buy anything. I think either the 3.9 or 3.6 would make a great base engine.
