Detroit News: GM may drop GMC and Pontiac
I would think any product being moved from one division to another would at least need to be slightly restyled to fit the new brand, and also be renamed... first thing that popped into my head was the way Bravada became the Rainer when Olds was eliminated.
Sure, but I wonder which brand would get it, if any. Certainly I think it fits more in line w/ Chevrolet, but thats a lot of 4 door sedans, though it would instantly become my favorite. Shame, I really like the Pontiac nose on the car, I suppose I'll have to get one some day and hope the Chevy dealers can fix it if it ever gets front ended.
Why do you guys keep saying Obama wants to eliminate brands?
He's probably just telling them, "more cuts, faster, and deeper".
I can't believe he would even say to GM, "get rid of Pontiac and GMC".
And I won't believe it until someone can show me a quote where he says it or a video clip of him saying that.
It's not that I love the guy or hate him. Quite frankly I'm indifferent at this point.
It just seems rediculous to me to say the president is telling GM which brands to cut.

But along comes, big bad Obama and his "Wicked Army of Automotive Darkness®" whose only purpose in life is to dictate everything on how our car companies will run, "ORDERING" General Motors to drop Pontiac and GMC.... as if the President himself is sitting in the boardroom giving orders.
Sorry guys. GM has been edging Pontiac out for a decade. It's General Motors themselves that's currently mulling the idea of killing off Pontiac & GMC.... all by themselves..... Guys, you are aware that some companies do think on their own and come to their own conclusions... sometimes.
As for government involvement, again, if you didn't get the memo, General Motors Corperation ran itself into the ground December 31st 2008 when they ceased to function on their own money.
That notion was seconded by their own accountants when (as required) after crunching numbers, they announced to stockholders back in early March that General Motors was no longer able to function as a company via a "Going Concern".
Guess you guys missed that memo as well...... ya better start checking those memos more often, and quit hitting the delete button.

GM can AT ANYTIME can hand back the taxpayer money they have, and merge with anyone they want to, gain any loans from anyone who will lend it to them, and sell any bonds on the market they want to and raise cash.
Truth is, no one has been willing to lend them money for nearly a year, no one wants to merge with them, and GM has had trouble selling bonds since well before the economy caved in.
Fact is that the General Motors Corperation (including whatever cars we love made by the same) would be fully, completely, and totally dead, gone, no longer here without government money. Some seem to strangely feel that the government should simply hand over taxpayer money without any questions or influence.... something every single lender, stockholder, or bondholder has a full 100% right to do.
Another fact is that General Motors (depending on whose numbers you believe) is between 60 and 100 billion dollars in debt. They simply will NEVER dig themselves out of that. Look up how much profit GM averaged annually the past 10 years. Then YOU do the math.
You don't simply wake up one morning, open a bank statement that came in the mail, and suddenly realize that you're 100 billion in the hole. This has piled up over many, many years through a broad compilation of events. There has been plenty of time to deal with this... many many years. On top of that, to pile as much resources as you could in such a venerable market segment then later piling huge resources into a vehicle that simply will not make money, and in both instances either delay indefinately or kill off completely projects that would not just be profitable, but would also maintain a broader reach in the marketplace is really, really...... what's the word?..... dumb.
And to even remotely suggest that these very same guys (top executives and board members) know what they are doing...
and that we should simply hand over OUR taxpayer money to them without question....
or look at where the company ended up with those guys and still think that a group of financial experts, bankruptcy experts, with input by 2 top level, fortunes-from-scratch billionaires aren't a better choice for determining what it will take for these companies to survive (many of their conclusions have been echoed by members on this very board since I joined nearly 10 years ago)...
and instead want to believe that the President Of The United States has nothing more valuable to do with his time or that he has groups of government employees peering over the shoulders of every GM worker or decision maker...
in my most humble opinion fits neatly into a very fitting group.

Ya, the best fit would be a Chevelle, or even an Impala... but it's hard to see them replacing a 200,000 volume Impala with the volume of the G8.
I guess they kinda did that already by replacing the higher voluem Grand Prix with it...
Eh, who are we kidding? G8 will just probably fade away into nothingness if Pontiac dies.
Guy, you hit the nail on the head.
It's as if some people here think Obama called Henderson and gave him the Lumberg:
"Fritz? Yeaaaah, it's Barack..... Yeaaaah, I'm.... gonna have to ask you to.....go ahead and...... cut GMC & Pontiac from your portfolio. If you could......go ahead and cut them..... that would be great. Thanks." click
How silly.

And I think the G8 should go to Chevy with a Chevy nose.
The Sky should go to Chevy with tweaked front & back ends to look like a Chevy and it should receive the Solstice interior.
The Sky already looks like a baby Corvette in profile.

Impala was slammed hard when fleet and rental agencies stopped buying.
Consider this: As of April 1st, this entire year there have been 27K Impalas sold..... yet 1 year ago, Chevrolet sold 29K Impalas...in only 1 month!
The Malibu is handily trouncing the Impala in sales now, and if the Impala is going to be around unchanged for another 2 years, that trouncing is going to turn into a game called "What's an Impala?".
The Pontiac G8 is outselling the entire Saturn division, and it outstrips even Chevrolets Aveo despite Pontiac's survival being in doubt.
If G8 were a Buick, not only would it be the best selling car at Buick, it would be within 200 vehicles per month of becoming Buick's best selling vehicle.. period.
This is something that is clearly getting the attention of those in GM who are frantically trying to piece together a lineup of cars and divisions that have as much return on investment as humanly possible, while having as broadbased and successful lineup as possible.
There is an irony at work here every bit as delicious as GM's RWD Alpha being the benefactor of the events of the past few months. Now, the G8 (which was likely to become a niche model before being killed off) is now likely...I'd say 75-80% right now... to see a mainstream role in one of GM's surviving divisions when the next gen rolls out at Holden in a couple of years.

It will be tough to see Pontiac go, as the only cars I have purchased, and held onto for any length of time have been Pontiacs. I hope the G8 goes to Chevy, and while it would get a styling make over, to lose some of the "Pontiac-ness", I hope it still continues to sell like it does now, incentives, or not.
Wouldn't have to.

12th and 9th in the top 20 vehicles in the US respectively.

I hate to see it happen, but I guess GM can no longer afford to make two or more sets of vehicles.
I guess this is kind of like how they didn't build a Firebird so the extra money could go right into making a better Camaro.
No G6 or Aura, but a better Malibu. Same goes for the Silverado. the GMC money can go towards MCE every 2-3 years.

My first response is that Buick is the one that sucks and should be killed.
No Pontiac would mean that they would have to make Chevrolet's a whole hell of a lot less ugly or I would have to pass on any of their mainstream cars.
At least Chevrolet has Camaro and Corvette. Two cars I could consider.

Adding to the irony is that the supposedly stunning RWD Impala was canned.
