Cobalt SS in CHP May '05
Cobalt SS in CHP May '05
With a lot of talk about IRS and Live rears, I thought this write up in CHP about the suspension was pretty good:
Evidently they improved ride and hnadling didn't suffer with basically a "Live"type ..."rear I-beam bolted directly to the hubs, for a more precise feel"." Myabe the F5 Camaro will get some new tricks, to the live set up.
"Cobalt rides on McPherson strut front suspension and rear "semi"-independent, trailing arm-with-a-twist beam rear suspension. Hydraulic ride bushings-pricey items, we're told-are used to provide the required "balance" between stiffness and pliability' Because of what the chassis' stiffness and the Cobalt's suspension provides, it has been dialed in with more travel(wheel travel) than is normal in the "compact" class, again striking a balance between overall ride and handling. These are qualities shared throughout the Cobalt line. The FE5 suspension fiitted on the SS SuperCharged , on the other hand, was developed on the road-racing tracks across America, as well as the famed "Nurburguring", with much of the work done by GM's handling Guru and hot-shoe driver, John Heinricy.
The SS Supercharged's L-shaped control arms are "aluminum", as opposed to the standard FE1 setup's steel arms. The mini-missle Chevy gets a beefy 24mm front stabilizer bar(standard piece is 18mm), along with a 22mm bar out back. The blown Cobalt also features four-wheel-disc brakes fitted with performance brake pads: 11.6-inch vented rotors up front and 10.6 inch solid plates in the rear. .........."

Re: Cobalt SS in CHP May '05
I know they could probably nail the live axle handling...I know, I have a third gen... but the point is that they will be behind image wise.
Its like OHC vs OHV, and Hyrbid cars, its all image. If Camaro came out with IRS and SLA front end, something off a higher end luxury sports sedan, and can offer it for about teh price of a Mustang with 25 year old suspension, it would be a good move.
