Chevrolet Motor Division will name its all-new small car Cobalt, Mary Larson, marketing director for Cavalier and Cobalt, announced today.
"We think Cobalt - a word associated with power, strength and dependability - is a great fit for our new small car," said Larson. "Cobalt will feature a clean, contemporary design, a spacious interior and excellent dynamic performance. Our dealers and customers will be thrilled with Chevrolet's newest small car." Cobalt will be part of a new small car lineup at Chevrolet. Cobalt will compete in the premium small car market against imports like the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic. The recently announced Chevrolet Aveo will compete in the entry-level small car market.
"A large part of the small car segment is made up of consumers who want the size and efficiency of a small car, but also want a car with desirable features, better performance and a more upscale package," Larson explained. "Cobalt will deliver all of this."
The Cobalt will be introduced as a 2005 model. Cobalt will be built at GM's Lordstown, Ohio, assembly center.

However, it seems like GM is definately doing what they can to strengthen their image. One things for sure, If they think the level of car the current cavalier is will cut it for a car with "strength and dependability" they are on drugs.
I really can't wait to see this new "cobalt" hopefully it will be a good indication of things to come.
I LIKE IT
I think it is a worthy replacement to the Cavalier. I drove one for a day(Rental) and it was completely horrible. The steering wheel sucked big time (on an 03 no less) but this one looks much better. I know GM will not keep the low stance on it, and it will be really watered down, but as long as it comes with some decent wheels this car should do very well indeed.
Hmmm I wonder what the interior will look like.

Maybe its just me, but for some reason that front-end "design" isn't what I expected the "mysterious red car" to look like.
Hmmmmmmm.
Is someone perhaps pulling our leg on the true identity of the "red-car"?

All we saw of the infamous Red Car was the back. It's pretty hard to look at just the back end of a car and predict what the front will look like.

If they are the same car, I'll be surpised.

No not really. I'm an engineer/designer so its pretty easy for me to imagine things from various angles. The blue cobalt screams compact ala Honda Accord. The red car (although only from the rear quarter) says 2+2 ala Ford Mustang.

If you compare the red car to the blue drawing, the body line/ridge on the side of the car matches.
Also, if you look at the passenger side of blue drawing through the window, you can see the windows and roofline match up perfectly to the red car.
Two dead on give aways that the red car is Cobalt.
