CNN reporting that GM will kill off Pontiac
SLP is making the g8 firehawk
But anyway because of that I kind of think they might be slightly more in the know and they said on tech GM uploaded pricing on next years v6 g8.
So I am going to speculate if they do kill it, it won't be for awhile and ford has already cut expected losses by half and said they could be profitable again by 2011.
So if pontiac is set to be phased out by 2011, by the time we get there GM might be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and change their mind?
Maybe GM is just buying time and making it look to O like they are doing what O want's to see.
Pure speculation and probably no one knows for sure, not even GM what will happen.
Personally I think it's abusurd to kill these brands. It's called the business cycle. You save in the good years and expect some bad years, but eventually they turn around. Apparently no one takes economics 101 anymore.

Badge the G8 as a Belair
Yep. Hugely popular selling name in the '50s and early '60s and has history. Could make an SS option for this name for the first time. Keeps current model differentiation intact and keeps the Holden platform around until a new RWD platform is developed, possibly for the Impala. I think a Chevelle that has 21st century styling based on the Camaro platform would be cool once/if GM is back on its feet.

Whats funny is how going from the Grand Am to the G6, and naming the car the G8 and other stuff people think the cars woudl sell better with classic GM names...
Yet the same time, people criticized GM for not being more like the import companies which pretty much "Number" their cars instead of name them.
I am sure there are frustrated people at GM.

soo the top selling cars in Pontiac and GMC are going away>??????
I and a lot have asked where is the logic in this???
and yet no one can tell me why..
kill off the 2nd and 3rd best selling divisions to what sell more cars? Get more profit??? I just dont know how you can when you sell cars that dont sell as much a Pontiac or GMC..

Losing the Firebird really diminished Pontiac in my eyes. The Solstice looked cool and the G8...not bad for a large 4 door. Not much else though. And neither of those cars really tempted me all that much.
It doesn't surprise me that GM is downsizing in this way. For decades, they've just rebadged the same cars in their alterate divisions with minor cosmetic differences. Lots of redundancy there.

ohh i know..just bringing up the question of "why" again.
Why can't Buick be just China only Or heck I mean think about it..use Ford who didnt take any money..
Ford Chevy
Lincoln Mercury Buick pontiac
That leaves GMC and Caddy..Well Lincoln is not competing with caddy..it can be a stand alone brand..and GMC...hey why not pit it in the Chevy dealers as thier "Superduty" like Ford has for thier trucks..
"profesional grade line of GMC trucks now at your local Chevy dealer"
You know how many Pontiac GMC and buick dealers are going to go under without Pontiac in the mix?
god I hate where this is going...this is going to make the reccesion very bad..

The G8 is not shared..
the Solstice and the Sky share nothing on the outside to link them together as the same car...
the vibe is not shared.
It seems that Buick's success overseas threw Pontiac under the bus. Too bad. Even though not many current Pontiacs interest me all that much, I can't think of the last time I had even a passing interest in a Buick.
Pontiacs used to have the exitement yes, now they are no more interesting than anything else GM offers. Killing the whole line I am not sure of that but Pontiac for sure has lost what it used to be.
I think the front wheel drive platform has really hurt GM. They survived the early years by selling more trucks and then SUVs but that ship has left the harbor now and they are left high and dry. GM took a very long time to master making a front wheel drive vehicle that had durability.
GM does have a lot of nice merchandice but they have such an anchor around their necks with the high priced labor, a reputation for making junk and now the recession.
I am hoping they can pull out of it but if the government is influencing how they will do business I call Kiss of Death. I think we will see the continued erosion of the company and having it happen slowly will lessen the impact on the rest of the economy and allow the other auto makers to ramp up to take on the additional demand when it comes back. GM may not totally vanish but no longer will it carry the big name brand it once used to.

The problem with raggin on GM for closing Pontiac... its not al their fault, they are getting pressure from government and media, that they suck and need to downsize. Looking at what they are keeping, doesn't look too bad.
The reason they are keeping Buick is its a cash cow overseas, and they are worried if they kill it here, it might affect sales overseas.

I feel buicks brand is shirinking as its getting older. They are great cars but they are like what caddy was. Sold to old people. Where Pontiac has younger people comming into the showroom...I feel like Buick will be in the same position in a few years for the sake of who will buy it..its only got a few cars going around.
Unless they plan on making Buick something more than it is..the G8 as a new Buick?? I just dont see where GM has a lineup for both Caddy and buick..Pontiac had more to offer.
