When will we know the full, true story of the Camaro name? 2007? 2017?

I am about as loyal a GM enthusiast as any 24 year old can be. I've owned 6 cars, all GM. I've sold them for 4 years. My greatest childhood memories are of family vacations in the back of, what else, my mom's CAMARO (later my first car)...learning to drive in my dad's old '91 Grand Am SE Quad 4 H.O....buying my Z28 4 years ago. I love GM, and will likely own them for the forseeable future as drivers. I will never sell the Z.

However, without the name, there is less cache to it, to me. It does not mean I am less loyal to GM, but it DOES mean part of that car is missing to me. There is a lot in a name when it comes to a muscle car. Hell, I even hope Pontiac doesn't do something stupid and call the next-gen GP a G8 or something...

Names mean something...in this case, it means a lot. You know, we are a rare breed of car enthusiasts. How many other people have to whine like hell to get a name back a manufacturer actually WANTS to bring back?????????

If they build a car that Performs great, looks great and have a decent price tag, they can call it what ever they want.. BUT IF IT LOOKS AND PERFORMS LIKE A CAMARO, then the name needs at least to recall "camaro"... why

well, people needs to know that THIS car IS the next camaro, even without the name on it..there is a fight that it´s not over against must@ng, and throwing a car that is NOT the No. 1 contender may end it and open the door to all others that are waiting for the chance to get in the ring.. this will put this "new" car at the end of the line and may take some years to move forward.

If there is no way, and I mean NO WAY that they can call it camaro, and the car IS the 5th GEN CAMARO then let everyone Knows it, and let the people call it camaro if they want, no matter what alphanumeric name they put on the fender..

I fell in love with Camaros when my primary transportation was a 2-wheeler. My love for these cars was totatly responsible for me becoming an exclusive GM customer for more than 20 years. In that time, I have owned mulitple versions of F-cars as well as sedans, economy cars, and trucks. When GM anounced that they were killing these cars, I announced, on this board over 4 years ago, that the next new car I buy from GM would wear the Camaro name. I have not yielded from my position. After more than 20 years of loyal service, I have purchased not 1, but 2 new vehicles from none GM sources. The sad thing is, I have no regrets.

For me, Camaro carries more weight than Chevy or GM. A new Camaro may be the only thing that could bring me back at this point.

Now, having said that. When I say Camaro I do not separate the name from the car. To me, they are one in the same. A car that is a Camaro must be named Camaro. A car named Camaro must also be a Camaro!

 

Ok,then call the base model "SS" and the hi-po version "Z-28".No camaro name would be needed then.

They could call it "Camero", since that seems to be how half the friggin' world spells it anyway!

BTW, I was too lazy to read through all the posts on this thread, so I apologize if someone already said this.

If the new Chevrolet coupe is too large for a Camaro, then dont use the name. The 4th gen feels and looks huge and oddly the interior feels cramped. Thats why I never wanted one. The 67-69 Camaros looked lean, muscular and sat more upright so they were much more user friendly on a daily basis. So, for me, if it has the right 1st gen feel call it Camaro.

If the coupe is not called Camaro, but it looks and feels like it should be a Camaro, then I would probably not purchase one.

 

What you say is reasonable but reason plays no part in passion. Passion is what Camaro's heritage and rich history invoke. That's why many of us here feel a Camaro by any other name is NOT acceptable. It would have been perfectly reasonable of me to have passed on my 02 and gotten something within my means. It was passion however fueled by 20 years of fond Camaro memories that made me say one last time friend. It was the memories of riding in my brother's 69 L6 auto to 350 4-speed conversion beast, it was the recollection of the feelings of envy I had when my friends in high school got their 74 350 and 78 Z28 Camaros, it was the regret of totaling my 84 berlinetta a solid car by all means that put me through that dealer's door.


If a Camaro true to its roots must be built without the Camaro name, I prefer it wear no name at all.

what if they called it PANTHER instead?

 

That would only make a difference if the car would have been called Panther back in 1967. The name Panther doesn't mean anything to the vast majority of Camaro enthusiasts.
