i dont know im gona shove my 2 cents in here. What does it matter if its a ohc dohc or ohv? what does it matter about how advanced the tranny is?

The simpler the design the more reliable it will most likly be. Why make something more advanced just for a slight advantage? So gm did a smart thing with buick and kept it simple while the competition went for way advanced and complex and whether buick was more reliable or lexus was less reliable which was the better choice reliability wise? is the person going to give a rats *** if there broken down on the side of the road whether its a dohc motor or a ohv? or if there is a sensor on the tail shaft?

and for the 200 hp argument for against the 260 i could argue this point. in terms of cars like buick most will be older drivers and as long as the car has enough power to comfortably propel the the car i honestly believe with the type of people buying these cars that the hp would not matter.

id also like to point out that even though the avalon has 268 hp against the 200 hp 3.8 the avalon only has 18 more foot pounds of trq the 3.8 and 230 and the avalon at 248.

In 1998 the 3800 4 speed unit was ahead of the game in terms of idle quietness and DEFINATELY performance. The 2000-2004 Avalon was packing 210 hp/220 tq while the na 3800 cars had 205 hp/230 tq and the 3800SC cars had 240 hp/280 tq.

Sure the 2005+ Avalons have 268 hp but that isn't the models in question here is it?

Just in the plain sense that it has more gears and more complexity.

Competitive? Who said anything about competitive?
It's not obvious that I was replying to a post by 91_z28_4me? Calm down -- you're getting all riled up over stuff that GM is discontinuing.

Yeah, to be perfectly honest I've never really enjoyed the 'feel' any 3800/4spd GM car that I've driven, although I've never been in a SC. The throttle seem laggy and the transmission hunts too much.

But I'm not really the target market for these cars, so who am I to judge? I'm sure they're perfectly adequate for the traditional buick buyer, who prizes time-tested reliability over perceived or actual high-technology.

I'm just saying you can't have your cake here and eat it too. If you want to brag about Buick reliability, who cares about some BMW transmission and 1912 engine and so on that Buick doesn't even use? It's totally irrelevant to the topic.

And the study covers 2004 models, so almost. Next year.
