I personally know at least 3 people whose company closed up shop in one state and moved to another and gave employees the chance to move (all expense paid) or to take a severence package. One friend's package equalled 1.5 year's pay plus the continuation of their medical coverage at the same premiums for at least that same time. The other one recieved 75% pay (also for a year or so if I remember) and a lump sum payout. Neither were union.
Severance and job placement packages may *have been* common for large companies *in some circumstances,* but if you think it is normal or common for every mid-level manager or technical staffmember to be handed 1-2 years of pay upon being laid off, you're smoking your lawn. More like 1-3 months. Been there, did that, saw LOTS of people get these kind of deals--people from technical staff to director level. That is *far* more common situation than a couple of years of handouts.

And if you think companies are going to keep up the 2 years of handouts in the current economy . . .

The only guide you need to follow in an At Will state like Florida is that you cannot terminate a person's employment for discriminatory reasons.

Only two years? Some companys give you much more. A friend of mine who was an engineer for PG&E a few years ago, got laid off and his package was basically 3-years pay. He had worked their less than 10 years.
