2009 Chevrolet Cruze
Could you imagine the marketing potential though?
You could do sexy Spy vs. Spy ad campain featuring Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz chasing each other around in the new Chevy and end it with a catchy slogan like "The new Cruze by Chevrolet... the "Cruze" you really want." or ..."Catch the new Cruze at your Chevy dealer." Heck come to think of it, they could build a whole movie around it as one giant ad campain.

Coming in mid 2010
This is from Car & Driver:
The rollout begins in Europe, where the Cruze will begin production early in 2009 for sale in the spring as a 2010 model. North America must wait until a mid-2010 start of production at the Lordstown, Ohio, plant that makes the Cobalt and G5. It will be sold as a 2011 model in the U.S.

Does this mean the Volt has shrunk in size?
Chevrolet's next new compact car will make its debut in October at the Paris Motor Show with a new name. The Chevy Cruze is the Chevrolet brand version of GM's global compact car platform known as Delta. The Cruze will be built in a number of locations around the world including Lordstown, Ohio beginning in spring 2009. When the Cruze launches in the U.S. it will initially be built alongside the existing Cobalt, which will likely be offered only in cheaper low content versions for another year or two. The Cruze will be powered by GM's new turbocharged 1.4L four cylinder that will eventually see use in a variety of GM small cars. The platform of the Cruze will also form the underpinnings of the next generation Opel/Saturn Astra and the Chevrolet Volt. The GM press release is after the jump.

"Like totally gag me with a spoon!"
I really wasn't suggesting to name it Cruz, just saying that when people hear Cruze, they may think, Cruise or Cruz as well.
WHY HAVE A NEW NAME, AGAIN, THAT NEEDS TIME AND $$$ THROWN AT IT TO ESTABLISH A NEW IDENTITY, WHEN THE CURRENT NAME WORKS JUST FINE??????????????
(Caps lock on due to the poster being sick to **** of watching decent models with decent brand equity lose their names for new names no one's heard of. How many different new compacts has Chevy alone had since Honda launched the Civic??????????????)
I love GM like no other, but some of this **** is getting ridiculous...

Civic = 5 letters
Camry = 5 letters
Cobalt = 6 letters
Cruze = 5 letters
I'm guessing some marketing genius figured out the reason the Cobalt wasn't selling as well as Civic and Camry is because it had too many letters.

While I have mixed feelings about changing the name again - like Jason E said I don't think that Cobalt has any significant negative brand equity and I think it's a better name than Cruze, to boot - I'd guess that they're making the change due to the fact that this car will be sold worldwide in pretty much the same configurations and they want them all to have the same name. I'd guess for one reason or another they don't want to use Cobalt in some of the foreign markets.

I still think about the name "Nova". In Spanish, it means "doesn't go".
