'82-83 Z28s had fiberglass hoods('84 Zs didn't have fglss hds.)and had either vacuum or electric accuated door flaps at the windshield end of the hood decals for cool air induction.

Ah. I did not know that.

Know why they went away from that after 83?

I'm not sure but I think that it was stupidity.j/kProbably because the openings would rust from exposure to moisture,don't really know why.I'll try and find out.

EDIT OK,the only thing that I found was that going through the car wash those hood flaps would open under the force of the water and dump water down the engine.

Yeah, they had a water/ice ingestion issue. And the hood was only designed to work with the dual throttle body CFI system, which was dropped after '83.

Too bad, it was a neat feature. Those Crossfire Camaros weren't too fast, but when you stomped the gas, it was pretty cool to watch those flaps open on the hood.

how they had the flaps facing towards you and they'd open to take in air?

No they face towards the front of the car.
