Question ping/knock under load in autox. question?

Dear friends,

I had the GREAT pleasure of running the SCCA race at Talladega Grand Prix last weekend. (http://www.tgprace.com) It was REALLY fun, I thought I had some pretty good times until a senior instructor drove my car and showed me all the things I was doing wrong. After getting back in the car, I knocked 3 seconds off of my best time.
Man I LOVE that track. BUT here's my question.

In the 180 sweeper under heavy acceleration (coming out of the turn), we noticed a severe ping which sounded like disieling in some of my other OLDER small block GM V8. This car has a Tuned Port Injection 305 and a 5 speed. The instructor suggested that it might be early detonation or an igntion problem. The car is running stock timing and i did put a new ACCEL cap and rotor on last week.

Does anybody have any ideas about what might have caused this? It went away after we lifted (releasing the load) and then coasted for 2 seconds and got back on the gas. It didn't return on any other runs OR on my 1.5 hour trip back to atlanta.

Do I need an MSD? Is it time?

other ideas?

Hey Brian!! You got a picture!!!!! I want a picture!!!!

Since it didn't do it anymore, are you sure that's what it was?

If that is it, it could be a fuel starvation problem. Since you're now running on R compounds and it was a high speed sweeper (stayed in it for a while) you could have uncovered the fuel pickup. I know 3rd gens had a problem with that. Just a thought.

Steve,
You can get an aviatar by making a 5 dollar PayPal donation to Jason and the folks that run this board. (it's well worth it). Then you just take the tool from EASY THUMBNAILS (http://www.fookes.com) to create a small enough thumbnail of your car.

Pretty cool i admit. Of course, that's MY CAR in action.

i don't know about fuel starvation. I had that problem a while ago and it was more a complete SLOG, power loss, hesistation, rather than a pinging and knocking.....

i'll take a look at it though.

Take care and good luck.

Brian

Thanks. I can make my own using Macromedia's Fireworks (I use that and DreamWeaver for all my web work).

Don't some cars set timing by turning the cap? If yours is set this way, did you inadvertently put on the new one differntly, thus advancing timing?
