Why am I spending so much on paint (pics)

I just got back from checking on the status of my '89 IROC. My vette buddies think I'm crazy for spending $9 grand on paint, weather stripping and new lighting.

But I'm sure you guys would agree that the cost is worthy of my recent acquisition. This ride was a deal I just couldn't pass up. New crate engine, new 5 speed, all new leather interior all with GM parts and tasteful mods. All done by the local Chev dealer with all the receipts. All it needed was great paint. This will be my "Boulevard Cruiser" and rightfully taking its place in my garage with the other fine Chevrolet machines.

If you guys have any ideas for wheels & tires, post 'em.

What it looked like last week:

What it looks like today:
Getting ready for paint, block sanding. Color coat and 3 coats of clear.

The car looked plenty clean before hand, but guessing by the cars in your sig, you dont have a problem dropping large amounts of money into cars, so whatever. It will look real nice when its done though.

Hey man...if you want to put money into a paint job for your 3rd gen, then do it. It seems to me I hardly ever see nice 3rd gens, so anytime I see a well built 3rd gen, it really says alot...Im sure you will be happy with it all said and done...Clean 3rd gens are hard to come by, so when I do see one, it makes me happy. Why not support the guy? We are so used to seeing 3rd gens look like ****. We should all be enthused about seeing a 3rd gen look good. It is an F-Body

Yeah, I think your crazy.. for taking it to the Chevy dealer where I'm sure you are going to pay alot more for your body work. I'm sure it is going to turn out beautiful though, it doesn't look like any corners are being cut.

I totally agree. This father/son team paid the dealer to do all that work. Over $11k in reciepts. That's why I feel the paint work is warrented. Believe it or not, I traded my '04 YFZ 450 atv (worth about $6K) for it... I know, what was he thinking. So, even though I'm dumping $$ into it. It will be a nice car keeper and I won't have that much into it.

If that was my car and I put that much money in the paint, it would never leave the garage. If it did, it would become a "trailor queen."

Im with you on the paint. The more expensive the better. With the body work, new parts and paint I have close to 18k in mine. I did do all the body work myself so Its alot less than 18k (prolly close to 2k in body work materials) then add in the hood 700, the new doors, 400, the new fenders 200, the body kit 1800, thats 5100 just in parts and materials. Then add in 400+ man hours on the body work@ 40 bucks a hour if I had a shop do it. That would come out to $16,000 So were up to $21,100 If I had a shop do it all. Thats just for the body stuff. Add in the stroker, interrior, custom speaker box and amp rack all fiberglass, the sterio, amps, subs, componets, lcd's, racing seats, harnesses, suspension stuff, wheels, tires, etc Ill have close to $35,000 when its all over. Thats still assuming I had all the work done in a shop which I didnt. so im comming out closer to 20k in reality.

post the finished pictures! I'm really interested in seeing this thing all together.

Generally with body work you get what you pay for. So it should look gorgeous. I see guys on here drop that kind of coin on a 4th gen to get a glass like paint job. It's nice to see someone bring a 3rd gen up to par.

I will definately post pics when done... should be in another 3 weeks. As far as adding power... I will be doing a nitrous kit, but not much of one. All my vehicles have big engine mods. Except for my VROD, all my cars/truck push over 500 horses each, my Z06 is closer to 600. . This IROC-Z is going to make a great cruiser

9 grand for paint? I don't think so. I'll wait for the pics, but personally I just don't think I would be able to justify that kind of money. Good luck tho, and I hope your happy with it.

That seems a little expensive... if you are changing the color then maybe a bit more justified Either way, looks like you'll have one of the nicest IROCs around! I had a 90 IROC and now regret selling it. Couldn't afford it at the time but wish I had my baby back now
