What size rims?

What are the biggest rims I can fit on my 96 SS without doing any hammering?... or at least very little hammering

hey whats up, i have 19's on the front and 20's on the back and did no modifications at all to the fender wells. i have seen 20's on all 4 corners too without any hammering. i think it depends on the width you go with though. lata

What wheels "fit" is an issue of the overall tire diameter, not the wheel diameter. As long as you get the correct offset on the wheels, and the correct outside diameter on the tires, they will fit just like the original wheels/tires. In general, I haven't seen too many people go wider that 9.5" on the front, and a 275 or 285 section width tire. You can live with anywhere from 45mm - 56mm offset, depending on how close you want the outer edge of the tire to the fender line.

In the back, you can go up to 11.0" width, with a 315 section width, with minor "hammering". Best setup is with a 50mm offset.

You can look at combos like 275/40-17 or 285/40-17; 275/35-18 or 285/35-18; or 285/30-19. Where you will get into trouble is with the 20" diameter rims, because the 275/30-20 tire will be about one inch larger in diameter than stock, which pushes the tire 1/2" further up into the wheel well, and raises the body 1/2" more off the ground.

If you need need details or photos showing the mods for 11" wide rims in the back, let me know.

Listen to Injuneer, he is right on track with what will fit and he won't steer you wrong with tire/wheel selection. (pun intended)
