Tire width question
The problem isn't what width fits on a 16x8 wheel, as much as it is "what tires are available?" Most manufacturers recommend a rim width of 7" - 9" for a 255/50-16, so there is no problem at all with putting a 255 on our stock rims. But you will find that the tread width varies so much on a given size tire, from manufacturer to manufacturer, and even within specific models from the same manufacturer, that there may be little if any real difference between a 245/50 and a 255/50. The theoretical difference is 0.40" wider section width and 0.40" larger outside diameter.
Problem is no one makes a performance street tire in anything wider.....
If you go to Tire Rack and start putting in various size combo's, the only tires that come up in the search are things like the Hoosier road race and auto-X tires. They have a 275/45-16, and they recommend a wheel width of 8" - 10" for it. Only problem is no tread depth, and a very soft compound with little tread life, and problems in the rain.
