The stock SS/WS6 17x9 wheel has a 55mm offset, which gives it about a 7.13" backspace. I have run OZ Monte Carlos (17x9.5, 49mm offset, ~ 7.15" BS), and the AFS ZR1 replicas (17x9.5, 56mm offset, ~ 7.42" BS). I have posted pics of a T/A with TT II's in 17x9.5, 45mm offset, ~7.00" BS. In my mind, the 7.00" BS is about as little as you want to go with, although if you don't mind things sticking out a bit... maybe you could get by with less.
There is a thread that I've posted to here in the past with pics of all these combos, which might give you some ideas about what things would look like if you moved the wheel/tire edge another 1" to 1.5" toward the outside of the car. Might want to try a "search".
