Suggestion for painting my rear...axle

Since I am taking it out to rebuild it, I wanted to know if it is most common to paint it black (if so, in gloss?) or paint it cast iron color to keep it looking as stock as possible.

What do you all think?

Thanks,
Ben

chuckys95 just did this here was his post . I think the gloss black looks sweet, that is what I would do, either that or polish it like Casanova did

If you want it to look stock, it should be a semi-gloss black. If you want it to look nice, make it shine, color of your choice.

If you don't you'll regret it. The previous owner of my car put a Strange 12 bolt in mine, and it's only been a couple years and the thing is pretty nasty looking. If it were me putting that thing in I would have painted it within seconds of buying it. Sure it's not a show car, but I also like to take care of my things and make them as presentable as possible.

The Strange 12-bolt comes from the factory unpainted. Soo before I installed it, I cleaned it up with solvent and painted it:

The black is a gloss finish. I did the center section in a "hammertone" silver... and it was a pretty decent match to the LPW aluminum cover that came with the Strange. After 3 years, it could use a little touch up:

Thanks everyone. I am glad I was not the only one interested in painting their rear.

I really have only seen black, but our rears came from the factory unpainted and mine looks terrible after 8 years. I just wonder if trying to stay more "stock" is a better direction. I know that everyone says its your choice, but would cast iron color look stupid? That is the color it should have been from the factory unpainted.

BIGKernel I sent you an email like a week ago regarding those billet grills you were going to make for your hood. I never heard back from you maybe you didn't get my email. Anyways I have the same hood as you and am curious as to your progress with those.

Whatever you do--Paint it, that stock rusty cruddy look is aweful and makes the car look old and not maintained, I'm sure no one will say--Hmmn that doesn't look like the stock factory grey. I'm sure they would have painted it had they not been so cheap. I say you should paint it whatever color will look good with the color of your car. My car for instance is silver, with black parts, so I painted it gloss black, and it looks great, actually I used rubber undercoating to cover up any minor rust and to give a better look under the car, I used 4 cans at 3.70 a can, now with my silver colored exhaust and black under coat it looks great, much better than factory, its not a real thick coating, but enough to give a nice clean appearance thats not thick and clumpy, only took about 20 minutes to do. By the way, I've used the black rubber undercoating aerosal spray on one of my rear ends, and it holds up great, probably better than the paint, since its rubber, and just semi shinny. If you think grey would look good, go for it, I personally think black is a good color for any car
