18" wheels, pros and cons?

Just like the topic says,

who's running 18" wheels?
Pros and Cons?
Is there a big loss in power becuase of the extra rotating mass?

Fitting conflicts? Would i need any modifications done to the car or would these fit ok in the wheel well?

I am planning to use the Eibach Pro Kit springs which would give me approx. a 1" drop.

Is it really worth the extra "flash" or would i be better off with 17's?

Thanx for the help and opinions.

Mike

Supposedly it isn't a matter of extra rotating mass, but how far the rim of the wheel is located from the center. By moving that rotating rim out further it supposedly takes more energy to move it, thus losing power.

The obvious answer here is boost

16" rims on a f-body is a crime in my opinion.

Thumbs up

I ran a 12.6 on chrome 18's in my Camaro. Not sure if it slowed me down any but the car looks 10x better with them!

Handles nicely too!

just remember that with an 18 rim you'll have smaller sidewalls on the tires, and this will hinder your launching capabilities due to less sidewall flex.
some guys are having trouble getting traction going form 16's to 17's...i'm sure 18's would be worse...

but then again, you 'll probably increase lateral traction...

The solution for that would be Nittos or slicks

Thats why drag racers use like 15 inch wheels. If you are that concerned with drag racing and traction, why dont you just get the 18's and keep whatever wheels you have now for track use?

That's what I do. I run 18's on the street but when I go to the track I put the 15's on. Other than that, it's no real big difference.

I wouldn't say there are any real cons to them as opposed to 17 or 16's. Maybe very very minor ones.

Some "meat" on a tire looks good IMO after all these are modern day muscle cars - not civics and not cadillacs. Save the 20" dub look for someone else. All it'll do is hinder straightline traction and you'll have to be on the lookout for potholes. You'd never believe how easily a rim will bend when there is little or no rubber padding on it - believe me I've seen it first hand. I'm not saying it'll just taco but run it over a curb or nail a biga$$ pothole and you may just warp it a tad. Maybe that's not the case with more expensive rims but it has been my experience so take it for what it's worth. You'll also get a stiffer ride which is good to a point but couple that with eibachs and I don't think it will be too pleasant. The eibachs are not going to help your straightline traction either mind you... I guess the low riding agressive stance has it's sacrifices. But it does look good

Also, take a look at tire prices for an 18" rim. OUCH. Heck the 18" rims are super expensive besides.

You gotta ask yourself (since this is your car) is it worth it? And if so.. how much is it worth to you?

Mike take a look here it really depends on how much that particular wheel that you want weighs. Some 18's are lighter than 17's....

Id put a shotgun in my mouth and pull the trigger with my toe before i went back to 16's.

I felt like i lost a ******** when i was broke and i had to sell the Chrome Y2ks and put back on the ZR1's

Oh well Y2Ks are soon to be back.

For the people that say you can't get a 18' tire to really hook I say BAH to them. I am running a 275 30 ZR18 and they are yokohama avs db and I cut a 1.95 60ft on them last week at the track. Now granted I'm an auto but i also have a 3000 stall torque convetert and as anyone else will contest who has ran at firebird raceway here in AZ will say we call that track fireslick for a very special reason. So I say go w/ 18's just get a good tire on them and they will hook. I paid $936 for those tires w/ the same size all the way around. on a 18x9 rim. the rims cost me $840 kinda funny ain't it. but oh well I'm very happy.
