why do mustangs sound better than camaros
Re: why do mustangs sound better than camaros
This is the Best LS1 sound I've ever heard. I'd put it up against a mustang exhaust anyday.
Everyone like to hate on flowmasters, but this clip keeps me loving them.
'01 SS
Kooks 1.75" LT
Dr. Gas X pipe
Flowmaster 1 chambers

It's like a mustang on steriods

Sound clip sounds great! IMO a 4.6l mustang still sounds better though.
I don't think all the flowmaster hate involves the single chamber flows. People don't like the american thunder catback because it doesn't flow well. The single chamber's flow great and are totally different than the american thunder's.

I always thought people hated FlowMasters because they sound hollow and tinny. (I will concede that LuckyYou's sound clip was nice and mellow at idle.)

whch would equal a traditional SBC firing order

what gmcvt said
which would equal 1-8-7-2-6-5-4-3 in Chevy cylinder numbering talk

Re: why do mustangs sound better than camaros
The single biggest contributor to exhaust system sound is (this will come as a shock to some) exhaust system configuration. There are other variables, but the pipes and silencers make the biggest difference.
Mustangs have equal lengths from the collectors to the h-pipe, and equal lengths from there back. The older vehicles also have significant pipe length after the silencers, which helps too. The result? 4th order firing frequency predominates and it's a much smoother sound than you get with a Y-pipe system with unequal length legs.

Re: why do mustangs sound better than camaros
Fascinating. How unequal can pipes be and still sound like older vehicles? On my Nova, one header ends about 3-4" before the other when installed on the motor, which would make the head pipes slightly unequal in length.
Also, as you mentioned, pipes after the mufflers tend to make exhaust sound more "blatty" like duals on trucks. Some people say it has more "wrap" (rap?). I like that sound, but some people don't.

Re: why do mustangs sound better than camaros
all mustangs sound pretty much the same, they suck!
i've gotten a ton of compliments with my 3" flowmaster cat back, but this year i'm switching to an xpipe dual setup, which sounds pretty mean in my opinion....
to each his own, if you like them so much buy one... i'll keep my fbody thank you..

Re: why do mustangs sound better than camaros
I'm thinking about switching my crossflow flowmaster with a single inlet/single outlet flowmaster. It sounds like a log truck right now, probly because I cut the cat off...
Also I'm thinking of running the exhaust all the way out the back. Right now they are dumped straight off the muffler by the axel. The whole car rattles and its starting to get annoying.

Everything I've read seems to suggest that nateh is exactly right.
There was a write up about the "not-so-new-now" GTO & how GM engineers designed the exhaust system to sound like the old car. Very enlightening for me anyways cause I had never really thought much about it before the subject came up a couple years ago in this forum.
Interestingly enough... even when Ford went to the "mod" motor, the Mustang still retained its old & distinctly characteristic tone. Not by chance I'm sure.
