What the cost and wrok involved in doing so? Would coil packs be neccesary at the point, as the opti is the distributor

You might want to take the time to do a "search" here on the Advanced Tech forum. There is a thread with 119 posts in it regarding alternatives to the Opti distributor.

Opti Alternatives

There are several more threads that update the topic, show solutions, etc.

You need to define the balance of your requirements other than ignition. The stock PCM is looking for the Opti signals for purposes other than ignition. If you delete the Opti, you need to replace the signals with a synthesized signal (Electromotive Opti-Eliminator - discontinued, doesn't work with OBD-II), or you need to abandon the stock PCM completely.... but if you spend the time to look at what has already been posted, it will answer your questions.

YOu do not use the opti nor the OEM PCM for that!!!

Do a search on the "LTCC"... it does use the opti, but it will not redirect the high voltage through it, making it more reliable. The high voltages associated with MSD and other coils resulted in a premature wear and damage of the opti. With this you have timing retard for boost and n2o and a 2 way rev limiter... dont think you need more than that..
