Missing pushrod?

One of my rocker arm studs broke and the pushrod for that valve is now missing… I checked to see if the lifter somehow dropped into the crank case, and its still there. The pushrod for the other valve is still there, but came off the rocker.

Did this pushrod somehow drop into the crank case?

I have earth magnets on the bottom of my oil pan and moved them around to see if I could hear/feel them dragging anything around and I couldn't hear/feel anything.

Re: Missing pushrod?

You have the intake manifold off? It's probably in the lifter valley. I cannot imagine (unless it is broken into many pieces), that it can possibly make it into the crankcase.

Re: Missing pushrod?

I'm about to order new studs. Should I also be ordering some loctite or a thread sealant?

I have read all arguments from using 1 drop of red. Liberal amounts of blue.... to none at all. I don't think it is necessary but using blue wouldn't be bad insurance. Also don't go back with the stock studs. Get quality ARP studs.

Re: Missing pushrod?

I was in the same boat as you. Broke a stud with one of Lloyds way-too-wild custom cams when he did my headwork. My cam was chewed up from the lifter bouncing around without the force of the valvespring/rocker/pushrod keeping it engaged to the cam. Did 2 things: Went with 7/16 studs and new non self aligning rockers/guideplates/hardened manley pushrods. And GM847 cam. Never been more pleased with the direction I went. It has been solid for close to 8 years now.

Re: Missing pushrod?

Finally got to work on the car tonight and pulled my bent pushrod out of the lifter valley. Is there any reason why I should not purchase a single pushrod instead of replacing them all? I don't know why there would be an issue but decided it doesn't hurt to double check. Will be purchasing 7608-1 comp cams magnum pushrods. Thanks

How did you set up your valvetrain? Self aligning rockers or Non self aligning rockers with hardened pushrods and guide plates? If the latter, kind of a puzzler why one would bend. Bent or stuck valve maybe? If you are using self aligning rockers, the rocker may have slipped off the valve stem if you had even the slightest float.

My rockers are self aligning, and the pushrods are stock hardened pushrods. But the rocker stud broke, so that's what caused all this mayhem.

Ohhhhh Its been a few days since I originally read your post. I don't see any reason not to buy just one.
