Vacuum pump kits

What gains would be had from a vac. pump on a race engine with aprox 600 flywheel h.p.? Is it worth looking into over an Evac system?

yes, pretty typical on a small block; big blocks and large cubic in combo tend to give even more hp. On top of the ring seal improvements it also removes about 1/2 the air in the crankcase so there is less resistance pumping under the pistons and around the crank. (plus you don't get oil leaks while running!)

Interestingly- I have a 358 that likes the vacuum, but it was built with low tension oil rings and thin compression rings (.043" rings); when I dyno'd my 427sb, built with 1/16 nitrous compatible rings and std tension oil rings, it actually lost 10hp- likely due to too much ring seal and cylinder wall friction.

Anyone find a kit that would work with an LT1 accessory drive system? Or maybe an electric version?

check out www.starvaccumpumps.com they've got one that should work, and its not real pricey. I think Summit might sell an electric version.

Here's your only real choices for a vacuum pump. There are probably a few others but these are the top 3 used in racing.

Thunder kit only pulls 7" of vac. is that enought to even do anything?

I am using a low tension ring set and they are even back cut some.......I have not made the descison on the vac pump yet

Don't bother with a electric kit....

Reher Morrison has a nice kit

FWIW the better the ring seal the more power and vacuum are in it. IF you can get over 20" you are spending a LOT on rings and pistons.

So if 20" is too much and 7" is not enough, what would be ideal? And are most of the pumps adjustable?

10 inches is max for a streetcar, it kills wrist pins over that. Racecar, get as much as ya want as long as it is a pure trailer queen.
