Usual Damage internally for Spun bearings?

I am considering purchasing a shortblock LT1 from my freind who spun a bearing or two after his oil pump went out. He hasnt had the chance to open it up, What kind of damage am I looking at, he only wants 100$ and I am looking for a cheap block that I can bored out and make into a stroker motor.

thanks

If it spun a main bearing you may have a worthless block, tell him $150 upon confirming that the block is good. If he's a friend, he will not make you play roulette.

from what I was told, there is no damage to the tops of the pistons. Thats the farthest he went to look before he got a used shortblock elsehwere.

With spun bearings the only other concern would be the main caps which are not expensive unless u go with billet caps and the bearings were gonna have to be replaced anyway for a rebuild so $100 bucks for that short block is real good. Good luck!!

It will take out the block side too, not just the cap

If the housing bore is damaged but repairable you are looking at new caps, line bore/hone - which can run you $250 so is it really a great deal at that point? And even if it doesn't look damaged, you will still need to have the housing bore checked out because the heat can put things out of spec.

My point is don't just blindly buy something, make him agree that the block has to pass a magnaflux and be usable.

he said he wanted to build a stroker, so in this case you will get new rods and pistons and crank, so you should be good with everything, except the main bearings which may need to be line honed, this will cost about 200$ given it hasnt been damaged too bad, and hasnt been done before.....

like was said before pay him once it is confired block is good
