Oil Pan Design?

Do any of you guys know where to find some good literature, either online or in books or wherever, in regards to oil pan design?

More specifically, I may need to design and fabricate a low-profile dry sump oil pan and wanted to look at some basic rules of thumb before I dive any deeper into this.

Thanks!

Why don't you give your measurements to Moroso or someone and let them fab up a pan for you?

Just curious, why would you need anything smaller then what is currently available?

What kind of a motor is this? DIY is something I admire, but if it's a SBC why try to re-invent the wheel? There are so many people who make pans for the SBC that it's hard to imagine the right one isn't available off the shelf. Of course, most are for 2-pc. main seal. Is that the issue? Even if what's available isn't eactly right, the way to go would seem to be take whatever is closest and modify it as needed.

It's actually a diesel engine.

But trust me, I definitely need to have some background on oil pan design, and was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction. Perhaps I could call a representative of Moroso?

You are in the right area to be an OEM. If not, any buddies in OEM powertrain groups? They might point you to the right folks.

Dry sump, low profile sounds like roadracing. Contact Audi or Peugeot racing. OK, they won't talk to you, but check race engine TECHNOLOGY magazine for articles on both of the LeMans diesels. I don't recall if they got into oiling in the articles/pics.

I've never seen any books specifically on oil pan design, but as Rich mentioned, reverse engineering similar SI pans might save you a lot of work. I think the oil system doesn't know or care if the engine is CI or SI.

"Think like oil." Dry sump pans are probably easier to do than wet sumps.

Take the original/aftermarket and cut it up to make it do what you want= T/E.
When ya get it like ya want it and it preforms correctly make a final/pretty one.
It is time consuming to remake and baffle it to work but ya will have a nice piece when you are done.
