new engine problems...oil pressure
hey guys,
i have a new engine i'm building, and i've some questions/concerns....this is the summit kit
the engine is:
1996 LT1 2 bolt main
.30 over bore
std cap and rod bearings (speed pro)
speed pro forged pistons
stock PM rods
speed pro rings
oil system is:
miladon oil pan 7 qt
melling HV with miladon pick up
miladon windage tray
rear oil deflector !!!!!!!! mounts between oil pump and block.
ac delco filter
valvetrain is:
lloyd elloit heads 264/184
GM 847
cc 1.52 rr
comp r lifters
my problem is that when i try to prime the oil pump with the drill and flat head extension i cant get any oil pressure on my mechanical guage i have hooked up. the block was preped by the local machine shop. i talk to the machienst about everything... *****... plugs... everything... he said it was good to go!!
how can i make sure i have oil pressure if i didnt have the guage hooked up right?
what way should i have turned the oil pump driveshaft?
please guys... i have 8.5 quarts of oil in this thing that i dont wanna remove.
P.S engine isnt in the car yet.. still on stand

Oil pump turns clockwise the same direction that the distributor turns.
You're never going to prime the engine with a flathead extension. You're leaving a huge hole in the oil system where the distributor fills a gallery down near the bottom.
You need a dummy distributor to make a primer. Find an old distributor. A large cap HEI works but usually it's too big and gets in the way. Find a late model small cap distributor. Strip everything off the top so all you have is a shaft sticking up. You're going to need a 1/2" drill chuck to attach to it or make some modifications to use a 3/8" chuck. The last thing you need to do is grind all the teeth off the distributor gear at the bottom. When done insert the dummy distributor into the engine. The housing will block all the proper oil passages that are causing your "low pressure leak". Install a drill and prime the engine. It helps to rotate the engine by hand while priming because there are many places that get splashed oiled during a crankshaft revolution.
Why do you have 8-1/2 quarts in a 7 quart pan?

be aware, a cheap cordless drill may not give you adequate oil pressure. I used the proform tool on a 72 BB Vette and my 12.2v crarftsmen drill produced zero oil pressure, but my low power corded makita gave me 35 psi.
