need help undersstanding fundamentals of our ignition system, i changed everything!

ok, here what i did to screw myself, i have less than 3 weeks prior to the pump gas drags, and well, sure enough after getting the car back together with a completely new ig'n setup it will not start.

i basically eliminated the opti, 4 breaks last year was enough!

ok i have a Delteq coil pack setup with MSD 8870 coil adapters, with a Delteq trigger wheel and a DIS4 box from MSD. it is not a production piece that Pete assembled from Delteq, but here are a couple of notes after trying to fire it up.

turn key to run position, but no cranking and the fuel pump primes, the light on the DIS 4 red light turns on, and then off, when i crank i have no fuel pressure registering, i pulled #3 plug, and could not smell any fuel at all! also the DIS 4 box is blinking a code, for " intermittent signal input"

do you guys have any idea what that means? what tells the fuel pump to run after priming? and what tells the computer to fire the injectors? i am running an Accel DFI Gen 6 with a fasttrack jumper harness, so that i may maintain my factory gauges and such.

any help or point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. i am certain once this is figured out it will run extremely well.

I would hook up the fuel pump to the DFI so you don't have to worry about the stock PCM controlling it.

If you still have the stock PCM controlling the fuel pump, with no Opti signal, the PCM shuts down the fuel pump.

And without the optical signal from the opti theres no injector fireing either. Or rpms which means no sensor functions either. Im almost potitive that the pcm will never control the EFI without the opti signal. Did you take the opti off or just not use the high voltage side of it. Perhaps Im misunderstanding you. It sounds to me like you just took the opti off and plugged the hole!

hmmm i didn't know the Accel Gen 6 could control the fuel pump. i will have to check into that.

i bought the GM opti block off plate. the opti has left the engine bay! anyone know where the wire back to the PCM with the opti signal to fire is? i will check the haynes manual to see where that wire is.

thanks for the great info, at least i know where to look.

Ok so now I understand what you did. I can tell you that your wasting your time if you do anything else but put the opti back on or go aftermarket engine management. The computer will NEVER fire the injectors even once without the hi and low res pulse from the opti. So you have 2 choices...1 Put the opti back on for the pulses and continue to use the delteq coils....2 Use an aftermarket engine management system. You can run the fuel pump all day long but its not going to do you any good if the injectors wont fire! The worst part of the opti is the high voltage side anyway and you allready have the delteq system.

Re: need help undersstanding fundamentals of our ignition system, i changed everything!

I had a DIS-4 box go nuts on me before with the delteq system. I'm still using the stock PCM so I cant help much with the GEN 6....but past your fuel pressure problem try pulling the spark plug wires off the delteq and cranking the car they should arch a BIG blue spark off the towers. As far as the DIS-4 mine went wacky and would randomly not fire one of the coils at idle only? If you get it running make sure the red light stay lit 100% of the time. If you find one coil not firing check the wiring its easy to mix one of those 16 wires up, that could be the reason the DIS-4 is giving you a 'intermittent signal input' code.

EDIT I just thought of something if your running the GEN 6 with crank trigger your gonna have to do some cutting to the harness, the GEN 6 is now looking for the opti input you need to get it to understand its going to only be getting the input from the crank trigger.

Just hot wire the fuel pump and see if that solves the problem.

Taner,
Which Gen 6 unit are you using? The LT1 specific one? If you are, it has an internal board modification that will require it to have a signal from the Opti.

But that's if the Gen 6 was controlling the ignition. Is the Delteq controlling the ignition or not? If not then what would be the point of the crank trigger other then a signal for the Engine Management System? But then if it is a LT1 specific Gen 6 then it would need a opti signal?
