LT1 PCM on Gen1 SBC?

What will I have to do to get a distributor setup gen1 sbc to work with the LT1 PCM? I know that the PCM needs the high and low signals from the opti to know when to fire the injectors, but is it possible to use a crank trigger and distributor setup to get around the opti? Reason I ask is bcuz I know that SD is the only other anternative for me on a gen1 sbc and was hoping that I could adapt a LT1 pcm for a gen1 sbc.

Thanks,
Jeremy

Do a "search". I recall a recent post here on Advanced Tech from someone that has relocated the optical sensor from the OptiSpark distributor to a conventional distributor. That would do it.

Have you thought of other computer setups, like a Typhoon? You could still use it for an NA setup just fine, its older so probably a bit simpler (I've never looked at one in depth yet). They can do a 4, 6 or 8.

Or you could try a ECM out of a 3rd Gen. They came both MAF and SD varieties although the 90-93 SD setup is supposedly much better. You would lose the MAF (obviously) and SFI but they're easy to come by and the code is well disected so there should be no suprises.

Injuneer:
I did some searching, but was unable to fix the thread you were talking about.

I was doing some thinking, and I was planning on using OBD1, and when you put a double roller in a LT1 you can disconnect the crank sensor if I remeber right. So could you either locate the optical sensor on the crank, or somehow rig it in the distributor? Bcuz all the OBD1 PCMs need is the optical sensor to fire the right injectors right?

I didnt want to run the TPI SD PCM bcuz you are limited on cam selection and with a MAF the PCM will be able to adjust to elevation difference.

There is only a crank sensor on OBD II 96-97, the timing cover is different so that there is room for this sensor, OBD I doesn't have it.

You can't run sequential injection off a crank sensor.... you need cam position . So, you need the Opti in its original position, or with a Gen 1 block you need the optical sensor driven off the conventional distributor.

I'll poke around for the thread that mentions the relocation.

Injuneer: thanks for finding that. I posted on that thead so hopfully he might reply.

Is there anyway to use the electronic part of a HEI to send a type of cam position to the PCM?

There are I believe 360 holes in the Opti 'ring', which passes through the optical portion itself. I dont see how you would obtain that from HEI without hacking it up with Opti parts, the internal disk is not that large, maybe 3.5" or so (been awhile since I've seen it).

So I'm going to guess you may as well rip a used one open, and mock it up. When I opened a 94 Opti, the opti itself was not removable and the timing disk was not easily removed without damaging it, the 95 setup seems rather different. I heard there was a rebuild kit for the 94 which would imply some parts are removable, I just dont know how it is done, or maybe its just a 'bulk' replacement of the internals versus the 95 rebuild(?)
