Wink Let's talk about engine bearings.

So I was down at my machine shop the other day talking about my block machining etc. He asked me what bearings I was going to be using. I told him probably Clevite77's. He then procedes to tell me that those are fine for the mains, but he would highly recomend the Federal Mogal con rod bearing with 260* oil channel. Has anyone heard of or used these with good results?

A little background for those of you that don't know. I'm building a 383 LT1 for a blower/aftercooler which will eventually see around 14lbs of boost, maybe more. The cam will peak around 6k, so rpms really aren't much of a concern, but cylinder pressure is obviously.

Any thoughts on this? I've used Clevite77's before, and know many many engine builders that swear by them. I really respect this machine shop also, as they build a lot of high performance engines, including blown, turbos you name it.

Builders in my area mostly use the King Alecular bearings and swear by them. They wont touch a Clevite bearing for anything, they say the quality control has gone way down. Also they said they flake very badly on the circle track and big power 1/4 mile cars. I ran the Kings in my 15lb 355 and just tore it down with 11000 miles of hard abuse and they looked very good compared to some mains and rods I have seen. I have been looking at the Federal Moguls though, so who knows for the new rebuild.

Where did you get those Kings bearings at? How much? Do you have the part #'s?

Thanks!

I guess I wouldn't listen to anyone that doesn't know the difference between rods and mains for one but the Fed Moguls do always seem to be better especially the Ford stuff. Some of the Clevite stuff is terrible! BTW rod bearing never have grooves, only the mains on any normal automotive engines!

I heard from one of the more reputable shops around here that King bearings are softer on the outside than most bearings. Does anybody know anything about this?
