Installed spring heights

I was once told you had to run .100 longer valves with a solid roller, and couldnt figure out possibly why. Now I got to thinking, that at the normal valve length of LT1 the solid roller spring might already be compressed some, placing too much closed pressure on the valvetrain, so you would need to have the installed height be higher. Is this assumption correct?
