Forged crank question

I have a couple questions on a forged crank I am thinking about buying. It is a GM forged crank part number #14096036, I am wondering about the balancing of this crankshaft. It states a GM website that this crank must use a counterweighted flywheel for proper balance. I am using this in my LT1 buildup for a 600hp supercharged motor. Am I going to have any balancing issues with this crank and this motor? Also does anyone know off hand how much a 1053 crank will hold (hp wise ). Thanks for your help

Since LT1's come with counterweighted flywheels from the factory (externally balanced), it should work just fine.

FWIW, Brady runs a 1053 GM crank and makes a buttload of power

Just hope you don't uchre a flywheel. That means you need to tear down the engine to re balance everything.

Can't the machine shop take the imbalance of the old flywheel and put it on a new one.?

I've seen a 355cid LT1 make 724rwhp with that crank and a D-1.

Be sure that you send the flywheel that you are going to use when you get your stuff balanced. B & M makes an SFI replacement for the factory piece as well as a couple of other companies.

1053 steel is on the low end of strength for forgings. 4340 is quite a bit stronger. I believe 14096036 is a "twisted" forging, so again, not as good as a "non-twist" forging.

It was used in the 350 hp ZZZ, ZZ1 and ZZ2 engines.

If it's new (unused) and relatively cheap, it might be ok for 450 hp maybe. If it's used, all bets are off. Personally I'd use a new 4340 forged crank for 600 hp. Of course, if you really get 600 you'll be buying another crank sooner or later anyway.

Good luck.

Thanks for all the replies to the post, makes me feel a little safer about the crankshaft. I am 100% sure this motor will make 600 at the crank, seeing that my old 355 made 534 on 10lbs ( and this motor has more boost, headwork, intercooler and camshaft than the old one). So should I just spend the extra money and get a 4340? The only reason I am asking is this is a very low mileage crank I found and I have heard of quite a few people running it in there blower cars.

Thank you again for all you replies,
