Gold Coating from Swain and water injection

I've heard that the gold coating from swaintech is very hydroscopic and that is why you have to avoid prolongued atmospheric exposure before installing it on the engine, since the coating may later on come off.

Will spraying water or alcohol have any i'll effects?

I know richard is doing alcohol injection but not sure if it should be avoided or recommended.

Sounds like a good question for Dan Swain.

The piston crown isn't going to see prolonged exposure anyways. A small bit of water vapor then poof, it's gone.

I use their regular TBC and not the gold. On teardown, the regular stuff is always still there but the gold seems to have taken a vacation.

Swains "regular" Thermal Barrier Coating for the crowns. I have not used the skirt coating.

Well.. did the change...

Dan told me that the GC was a bit better, specially for turbocharged engines... He also adviced me NOT to go with the GC due to the extreme humidity as the coating needs the engine heat to do the final curing...

He also told me that if it where a turbo engine he'd recommend it more than for a S/C... i was like :WTF:

Probably a Turbo car sees higher EGTs...

A lot higher. The headers I had coated for the IROC started to bubble last week when we were road racing it. I thought the coating was coming off, but I was assured it's normal and it's the last stage of curing. The only way to prevent this would've been to expose the entire header to extreme temps before installing them. Next time, I'll throw them in a volcano.
