Egine Oil/Rear End Temps
Egine Oil/Rear End Temps
I've installed a canton race pan and I'm using the oil temp threaded recepticle that is on the passenger side of the pan(below the starter). Yesterday at the track (road course. 75 deg day) my newly installed oil temp gauge reads 300 deg F. It seems stable around 180 idleing hot and climbs to 240 and then to 300 ...a little high I'm thinking ?? LOL.
I have already installed a small oil cooler but maybe I need one with a larger capacity.
I suspect the sensor is close to my headers or ?? This car has run 2 years of track days with no oil problems and the coolant temp is 180. Anyone had this problem ? I'll try the sensor in the low oil plug on the other side of the pan when I get a chance.
BTW what temps is anyone seeing in the rear axle ? I have a sensor installed and it was reading higher than my 240 max gauge.
This is a forged LT1 383 with cam/heads etc.
TIA

300 is deffinately a little high. Steady state 220 - 240 is not to bad. But obviously you need to find out what the temps. actually are! Get a good contact thermometer and check the center of the pan after a run.
Non-cooled rear end temps. are commonly in the high 200 to 300 range. This is probably OK for short racing stints, but not for any endurance runs.

Update.
I believe that my problem lies with the Y pipe that is very very close to the oil pan as it crosses over to the passenger side. That said ...I tried the following. The pipe will be modified ASAP.
I installed a much bigger oil cooler and placed a second temp sensor, this one above the oil filter and left the one I installed in the Canton pan. I ran about 15 to 20 degrees cooler at the sensor above the oil filter (260 degrees))...so some heat from the y pipe is affecting my first oil temp sensor. My pyromter gave me a 240 degree temp at the centre of the oil pan. I have a replacement plug for the oil level fitting and I'll drill it for another temp sensor ...see what that says ..LOL
BTW my rear end was reading 300 degrees plus ..my gauge only went to 300 ...
I came of the last turn but one at Gingerman and promptly ripped all the teeth (exept 2) off the pinion gear ...ouch !
Good excuse to change to 3.42 and a Zextel Torsen T2R ..installed already ...
