Carburetor Questions. Plz Help.
Alright, i have a 1967 Camaro ss. with a 355. 2.02 heads, i have a Holley 600 carb with vacuum secondaries and new jets. Now the guy that did my carb for me didn;t know to much. and i basically know nothing about carbs.
So my question is this. What can i do to my carb that might make me lose a tenth or 2 in the 1\4 mile. I have a g-tech pro that i use, so far ive pulled a 5.9 0-60 and a 13.8 1\4 mile.
Is their any simple things i can do to drop some time? like changing jets or powervalve or something?
And also, would pulling my air filter off just while im at the track help if i throw in bigger jets to help compensate for the extra air going in? i see tons of cars running no filters at the track. how much would it help?

I don't know if this is advanced tech, and they might move this, but....
Don't take your air cleaner off. It will straighten the air out and make it less turbulant before it enters the carb. Don't run it without the filter, and bigger jets wouldn't be needed regardless.
I was once in your boat. I have the exact same carb on my vehicle, you can email me if you have any more questions, btheri3@lsu.edu
Try this. Close to where the fuel enters the front bowl there is a screw in the "primary metering plate". There's one on each side. Take that screw and slowly screw it in until you notice engine RPM start to slow down then back it out. This adjusts your idle mixture. You tighten the screw to lean it out and visa versa. Just make sure if you have the screw turned out 2.5 turns on one side to do the same on the other. Keep the sides balanced. Try this as it is very simple.
After you do this, I'll tell you how to adjust your float levels. Also if your secondaries are not opening you could easily loose .2 in the quarter.
Do you have a fuel pressure gauge? There are others here who can help. I can talk you through most of this stuff too. Post your Q's here or email me for further assistance. Well, I guess we should try to keep most of the info on the board for people who come along in the future so post your questions here.
Also note, the powervalve won't add more 'power' to your car. It's just there to elimnate a flat spot in the transition from cruise to open throttle. It's part of the power enrichment system however. Also, larger jets will just make it run richer and will not add any power.
First we'll set your idle mixture. This is a no-brainer, but you may have questions if it's your first time. Then, once you can do this, I'll tell you how to adjust your float levels and you'll set the idle mixture again after this.
If your float level gets low it can hurt performance. Also, does the carb have a fresh rebuild on it? Working with a carb that's seen its better days will not give satisfactory results.
