What gears to get in 6-speed?
What gears to get in 6-speed?
I have a 1985 corvette with the 350 TPI motor and 3.07 gear ratio. I am getting rid of my 4+3 transmission and getting a Richmond 6-speed. I can't decide on what gearing to get in the tranny. At Richmondgear.com you can see the many different options I could get.
I was thinking of this combo but I don't know it 1st to 2nd would be too large of a jump and if this overdrive is too low.
1st 3.01
2nd 1.88
3rd 1.46
4th 1.19
5th 1.00
6th 0.62
My current overdrive is 0.67 so it would be close but my first gear is currently 2.88.
What do you guys think?
I posted this same question on corvetteforum.com but people there aren't as knowledgeable for some reason.

what do you do with the car (drag race/auto x/street)And when chosing the gears the lower first gear will spin the tires faster than one with a higher 1st gear if you are running sticky tires and drag race getting off the line faster is always a plus but if on street tires it will spin harder. You could talk to the guys at richmond they have tech support and get the same questions everyday.I would give them a call. They could tell you all about gear selection wich I caint.
.62 is not too steep an overdrive. I have a Borg-Warner T-56 which uses a .5 overdrive, and with 3.70's in the rear it's great on the highway and will get up and move HARD.
I like the last one you mentioned, with the more evenly-spaced 1-2-3 gears. The deeper overdrive will be fine with the 3.07's, and it'll give you much better off-the-line pull. If you can get the 3.01 1st gear with the 2-6 gearings of your last post that would be ideal IMHO. The 3.28 1st gear may bring the rpm's up too fast and blow by the TPI powerband.

Thanks for the replies guys. My 3.07 was the highest gear you could get in a vette back in 1985, this will probably be changed next year. I don't even have the money to do the trans but it must be done so just further in debt. I think I will go with the 0.62 overdrive but I'm still not sure on the first gear, maybe 2.72 or 3.01. THis is what my current tranny had.
2.88
1.77
1.33
1.00
0.67
As far as the ported intake I just don't have the money, otherwise I would get one.

I would go with the trans with the 3.01 first and keep the 3.07 rear gear you have now going to a 3.42 wont make that much of a differance and going with anything higher will hurt you cause the tpi stops making power at around 5k. It's not worth the 300 or so for the swap plus the gear.
You said you didnt have the cash atm anyways so do the trans and enjoy it. If you wana go faster put the money into headers and/or some runners.
