still be emisions legal? but i assume cost skyrockets.
Re: What engine to start with?
The problem with forced induction is that our heads weren't made for it. The compression is a little high and iron heads don't conduct off heat as well so detonation becomes a problem. Also, at 450 hp you will need a new bottom end (with NA, nitrous, or forced induction). So yeah, cost goes up because you probably will need new low compression big valve heads anyway plus the cost of the supercharger kit which will probably be around $3500 with pipes and intercooler (for a turbo kit, forget it). You may be able to get 450 hp on stock heads supercharged, but I would talk to someone who has already accomplished this first and copy what they do. Any way you go will probably cost big money for 450 hp street legal.
Re: What engine to start with?
LS1 probably wont be cheaper. The engine will run you around 3k plus it doesn't exactly slide right into our engine bays. I like the LS1 because it is very durable and supports upgrades well. Look into all of your options or lower your hp requirements if cost is really an issue.

These guys are about 20 minutes from me, and a friend of mine bought an LS1/T56 combo for $4500 from them with all wiring, PCM, shifter and pedals.
