What engine to start with?
What engine to start with?
I have an L03(i think) 305 in my car now, trans is good to take 450hp and I'll be getting a whole new rear end/gears/differential when i get off my *** lol
So that leaves my engine, one of maybe 10 pieces not yet replaced on my car.
I'd like something that I could get up to 450hp or so, without a super or turbo charger, and then i'll be happy with it.
But I dont know with what engine to start with, i see alot of crate engines, but most of the affordable ones say for liek 74 and older and I would need to stay emissions legal.

Re: What engine to start with?
What makes you think your trans is good to 450 hp?
And what rear end do you have that you think is going to hold that power?
What are the emission requirements in your state? In many places like here in ontario canada if you have an engine that did not come in your car your vehicle is filed under hot rod status and you only have to meet 1980 emissions standards which if your motor is running healthy is not a problem.

I got a tci 700R4 streetfighter, tci says it will handle 450
I have no rear end picked out yet, that will be a later job for those that view the drivetrain forum

Right now the car is running and i wanna enjoy it for the rest of the summer, then after the snow goes away in winter i'll do the rear end stuff.
Re: What engine to start with?
that tranny will hold 450 hp if its kept cold...but as soon as you start putting some power down and beating on it, if you don't have a seperate cooler or something, kiss that tranny good bye when all the heat pours into it...95 percent of trannies die because of heat, not excessive power...but as far as a motor goes, it all depends on your budget....if you want 450 hp, you would prolly need something like a stroker motor, 383 or something....better have a good side pocket book for that one...but have fun building up a rearend that can take 450 hp daily driver and be dependable....the easy way would swap it out for a 12 bolt....but then again, that aint' cheap either....it all depends on how big your pocket book is, you can dump tons of money into a drivetrain, let me tell you...i just got done doing it...started with the rearend, and just finished up the motor...and both of them are all brand new, along with everything in between....and it wasn't cheap... "speed costs money, how fast can you afford to go" is the question....

2500 a year is my budget rest goes to life and saving for problems and stuff.
it can take as long as it needs to get done as long as i can drive it. like buy the engine adn toy with it out of the car until its ready for its hot date.

Re: What engine to start with?
i wouldn't do a LS2....getting your hands on a Ls2 is gonna cost you an arm and couple legs...if you wanna go that route go with a Built Ls1, that'd be fun...i always wanted a LS1 thirdgen...you want FI, Carb, New engine???

Are you asking if I want a fuel injection or a carbuerated engine? I have no clue, which ever would help my cause more
Re: What engine to start with?
carb is probably the easy way out....because you could take a 350, bore it out .030, get a stroker crank and have a 383 shortblock for under a grand...then get some nice afr heads, like a rpm air gap intake, a cam to match and a carb and your sitting at about 450 hp with that setup...if you go with a built LS1, parts are real expenisve...just for the motor you'll probably pay 2500-3500...then heads alone for a LS1 are like 2g's, and everything else for those things are expensive as hell...I mean what ever route you choose, there are people to help you along the way....there are alot of carb guys around on these boards and alot of FI guys that can help you out...

Re: What engine to start with?
LS1's are bullet proof so what you could do is get a LS1, and spray a 150 shot of nitrous through it....because those are 350 hp motors stock, 305-315 to the wheels, then a 150 shot of nitrous would bring you right up to your goal...and have a 30 MPG daily driver engine, retain all emissions, and be fast as f*ck when you want it to be.....thats what I would do...i used to be against nitrous, but I'm really looking up to it now, I wish I would've ran some in my car...
Re: What engine to start with?
Find a 2 bolt main 400 block and have it built. You can stay with a fairly mild cam and a good set of heads and an intake and you'll see 450 pretty easily. Get the block machined for splayed main caps (this is where they convert your 2 bolt block to a 4 bolt, and angle two of the bolts for more holding power.)
