Trap door fuel pump repl. in a third gen ?
Has anyone done the "trap door" fuel pump replacement method on a third
gen. car. I'm running an LT-1/4L60 in a '92 RS 25th. Anniv. car that had a 3800 V-6 in stock configuration. While the engine runs fine, I'm sure that the pump is marginal in terms of delivery capacity and also OLD ....
Any input would be helpful.

Exactly. Do cut up the care do it the right way. It really is not that bad, I have done it three times on my car. All of which I dropped the rear and then pulled the tank. It has never crossed my mind to do the "trap-door" method.

Replaced mine with a Walbro 255lph pump.
Find pics on here or thirdgen.org of where to cut. I used a 6" Motabo disc/cutter. I was very careful to NOT CUT DEEP. Fuel tank and lines are about an inch below the sheetmetal. Once cut, you can hing it or rivet it back, etc. I cut the fuel lines with a hacksaw blade. Remove fuel filter under car after cutting lines. Flush line out before putting filter back on. Flush out tank side lines also once the assembly is removed from the tank. I used rubber fuel hose/hose clamps to finish the install. Varying lengths to get the hose clamps to be staggered a little. you'll see what I mean.Goodluck! have a friend with an extinguisher nearby...just in case.

IIRC, it took me less than four hours to raise my car, remove the axle, drop the muffler, drop the tank(that had been in for 21 years), install the 255 lph fuel pump, solder in some new connectors, and reinstall everything. I then fabbed up all-new steel fuel lines because I converted to fuel injection. That took a couple more hours.
I'd trap-door only on a car that isn't pretty, like a race car or something.

I would only do it the right way if my car was rare or low mileage. You have to double take the cut panel on mine,it's painted and shaped just like the channels in the trunk. Took longer to measure n cut than replace the pump. Definitely do it.
