tranny swap
this winter i'm going to probably do a tranny swap, and there are a lot of options and its hard to pick one..at first i was thinking six speed, but I don't think i want to go through th ehassel of converting from an auto to manual...then i was thinking of either getting my 700r4 built up which is real expensive, then my other two options are a turbo 350 or 400....if i went this route i would probably get a turbo 400 just because my dad woul dbe helping me do this and he is obsessed with turbo 400's because he had one in his race car and so on...will a turbo 400 really wake up my car, would it be worth the money? also how hard of a swap would this be??? any input would help..thanks

Re: tranny swap
If u did a turbo 350 or 400 swap,u would get tired of it in a week. Going from having OD (overdrive) to not having it is going to kill the gas mileage. Your car doesnt have enough power right now to break the 700,so im not really sure why u wanna do a tranny swap, but i know for a fact if it was me i wouldnt even consider anything w/o an OD if u drive the car alot,or often.
hope that helps

Re: tranny swap
thats a good point...i'm going with a holley stealth ram intake and some other stuff this winter to get the HP up to a solid 310-340 to the wheels hoping , and i don't know how good this tranny will hold with that because the tranny used to have a 305 attached to it, not a vette motor...maybe i'll just have to bite the bullet and get a six speed or something..what do you guys suggest??

Re: tranny swap
A well maintained 700r4 can handle about 300rwhp from an L98. Gearing, and traction can affect the power handling ability of a 700r4 to great effect. If you drop some slicks on there you can toast the transmission pretty quickly.
Shift kit(which you have), Trans cooler, and frequent fluid changes and you should handle the power just fine for now if you don't go romping on it every time..
If you really want to wake your car up, put a 9.5" stall on it with about 2,500rpm or so. That will drop about .3 off your time, AND extend the life of your transmission as there will be less shock.
I don't know for sure what my car is putting out JUST yet, but its got plenty of torque to fry a transmission. I don't fear for the transmission though, if it blows I'll just rebuild it......AGAIN. Forced by nessesity (I.E. too poor to pay someone) I learned to rebuild them myself, its much cheaper that way! The motor in my car is expected to make about 250 to 280rwhp and over 350lb/ft at the wheels with a tune.

Re: tranny swap
It will not wake it up it will make it seem slow. The th700 has really low 3.06 1st gear compared to 2.5 or something for the th400. Also the th400 uses much more power and energy to spin, it has huge heavy internals. Although it is a pretty much bulletprood factory tranny.

Re: tranny swap
Said it once and I'll say it again. Build up the 700R4 and you will not regret it. Go with the TH350 or the TH400 and if you are driving it much, you will regret it. My rossler trans that was built up lasted for 3.5 years behind an LPE 383 with me beating on it several times WOT every day there was no snow on the ground.

Re: tranny swap
GM has released alot of new parts for their automatic overdrive transmissions in the last few years. Stronger sun shells and 5 angle pinion gears have added alot of strength to the old 700. A decently build 700 should have no problems handling 400 or so RWHP these days.
