T 5 Question

I was wondering if anyone knows where you can get a bell housing for a camaro that will accept a ford tremec t 5. They are much more available and alot cheaper. Also is there anyother mods that have to be done in order to put it in?

I believe the input and output shafts are different (can't remember for sure), the trans case is a different length, the mount for the transmission mount is in a different location. You'd need a ford clutch disk and an adaptor pilot bushing (there are some available, try Lakewood). Overall, it does not seem very practical to do this swap (or everyone would already be doing it). If it were me, I'd swap to a T56 from an LT1 car (I've done that swap, it is pretty easy).

My thoughts.

GOOD POINT! The syncros are on their way out in my world class t 5 and I dont no if I should just get a rebuild kit and do it up, or get a tremec or t 56. I had herd the swap was alot easier.....But now that I think about it, Your right. Thanks for the info.

well if you have bout $2000+/- you should go with a t-56, but if not what is wrong with replacing the one that comes stock?

The last T56 swap I did...Hmmm.

$750-transmission and shifter
$150-crossmember
$350-centerforce flywheel for pre 1986 motor
$500-new clutch, pressure plate and bearing
$135-hydraulics
$50-pedals from junkyard

But, on a late model car. You can score the old clutch, flywheel, hydraulics and everything for about $1000 these days (we did that one a few years back with lots of new stuff) and then the crossmember.

By the time you buy a bellhousing, a ford tremec and adaptor parts, it will be cheaper to do the t56 swap (and it will fit).

I didn't say it was "free" but it can be done for less than the cost of a new GM T5.

My thoughts.

yea well i thought that you needed to have the driveshaft lengthend and you also have to modify the console and the tunnel that the shifter goes through...righ?

The T-56 uses the same length driveshaft as the T-5 and the 700-R4. You do have to extend the hole in the floorpan where the shifter comes through about 2" toward the rear, but your stock console and pedals will work. The T-56 hydros also bolt up to the firewall just like the T-5 hydros.

All-in-all it's a fairly easy swap. It can be done in a day if you start early and have everything on hand.
