Synthetic Mobile 1.......

I have a real quick question pertaining to synthetic oils. My 87' TPI engine was rebuild about 1500 miles ago running conventional Valvoline oil. I gotta admit that i love it, but was thinking of running Synthetic for the hell of it since i'll be going to the track tomorrow. From what i read, they say that once you go synthetic that its not a good idea to go back to conventional.... Is this true? The logic itself sounds stupid, but you just start questioning just to be carefull. Any ideas to the myth..

thanx

No this is not true Mobil 1 is fully compatible with conventional (dino) oil. But once you go synthetic why go back? Synthetics have been proven to be better than even the best conventional oil, if there is a best. Synthetics have a broader temp range, better lubricity, better wear protection, better additive package and you may even see an increase in fuel economy. I've used synthetics (Mobil 1) since my first oil change at 500 mi. and switched to Amsoil at 75,000 mi and have 210,000 miles on my 350 and it doesn't show any signs of giving up anytime soon. My compression on my last tune up was 191 on 4 cylinders 189 on two and the last two (7 & 8) was 184 and 186 pretty good for an old engine.

That post is completely right. There have been people that have ran Mobil 1 and have seen more HP on the dyno because of it.

If you change your oil & filter on a regular 3 month schedule the added cost is not worth it.

The idea is that it gives you an extended oil drain interval. If you will reread my first post you will understand why synthetics are better and why the extended oil change interval. I change my oil at 10,000 mile intervals with a filter change at 5,000 miles between changes and with 210,000 miles this engine runs great. For extreme heavy duty use you will not beat synthetics. Some folks are still skeptical and don't believe in something new. That's OK, just go your way but, don't think it isn't worth it, it is. You do it your way I'll do it mine.

so Mobile 1 might be a little more but i figure in the end it's worth it. better engine protection, slightly better fuel economy, 1 or 2 more ponies. why isn't it worth it? i certainly don't mind spending some extra bucks when i change my oil, which happens to be about every 6 months with the Mobel 1 in my 5spd. both my cars run great on Mobel 1, so i will continue to use it!

Exactly what I'm saying if you're willing to pay for best then go for it. I feel my Z deserves the best if I'm willing to use and race it. So I'll keep buying Amsoil for it.

I also use Amsoil- I'm a dealer but I only sell to myself. I won't compare it to Mobil 1 because they are both really top-of-the-line products, both claiming to be the "best" in this or that. But compared to conventional oils I like the fact they they pump faster when cold and don't burn into sludge and charcoal cinders if you run the oil up to 300*+ every now and then (or accidentally). Really means a lot in a high performance engine.

In my daily drivers I run 10,000 miles between oil changes and one of my cars has over 200K miles on it using this routine! When you own a bunch of cars it saves a lot of time and effort going 2-3 times longer between changes.

One thing I will say is true- if your engine leaks oil now it'll only get worse with synthetic oils.

I just pulled the engine out of my ride to install a new oil pan gasket, timming chain cover and gasket, and clutch. The bad leaks were the only reason why I didn't go syntec from mile 1 when I rebuilt my engine about 2k ago. My mechanic swears by the dino oil, but then agian. I've got a buddie that beats the nuts off of his truck from green to red and it's still alive on the fake stuff. It's seeing that kind of abuse on a motor without it smoking or knocking thats got me switching. I over reved and spun a bearing at the track a while ago so I kind of don't trust myself unless I have the best backing up my internals.

Beleive me synthetic isn't "the fake stuff", it's simply better. I wouldn's sell or use anything inferior. I've been selling and using Amsoil for 8 years now, nothing matches it in any tested category.

I'm a firm believer in synthetics, all my vehicles use Mobil 1. People spend thousands of dollars on their motors, why cheap out to save a few bucks on oil?

if your motor is that new def go with synthetic. try valvoline synthetic its cheaper and holds up just as good if not better and can raise oil pressure. if your motor is older with more milage dont even think about it everybody i know with higher milage vehicles(camaro, firebird) who ran sytetic started pissing oil out of the seals but def worth it if the motor is that new go for it and just for the record lucas additve is gods gift to motors.

lordmetalz28 Not true most likely your friends cars were probably leakers to begin with. I've never seen an engine that wasn't already leaking start leaking because of synthetics. I've started many cars at 70, 80, 100,000 miles with synthetics with no ill effects. Yes valvoline is cheaper but you get what you pay for and it will not perform in the long run as well as a full synthetic such as Amsoil, or Mobil 1. Just look at the independent testing performed on all brands compared to Amsoil and yes even Mobil 1 falls short of Amsoils performance.
