Question what kind of oil is in our cars from the factory?

Synthetic or a blend or what?
It says to go 7500 miles or so but I am not going to do that.. I will go jsut under 3K and change. Not sure I am sold on Mobil 1 yet. If it came in there from the factory then I may start using it but if its just a generic 10w30 then I will just go with my trusted Valvoline.

I've been wanting to know the same thing. I know the vettes come with syntec. But I've got plain ol' Valvoline 10W-30 in mine and will until it blows up.

On My Car I get Mobil 1 oil. GM uses that oil as replacement engine fluid on all new vehicles.

KIND! as in brand.. and not what you personally put into it as I know many of you prefer Mobil 1. But what I truely want to know is if anyone knows the brand and type.. the weight should be 5w30 but most brands have a type like Mobile 1 <-- brand SuperSyn <--type
If you have this info, I would greatly appreciate it.

What was used prior to that?

Also, Mobil 1 was the oil of choice on these boards for a long time. Recently, some people are starting to argue that the Redline is superior. Anyone know the truth?

Patman on LS1.com swears by it.

I don't beleive you can get a 5W-30 that is NOT synthetic, go Mobil 1 and go at least 5000 miles, the oil can handle it no problem. Studies have shown that M1 doesn't break down until well after 10k. Use a good filter.

according to patman, he suggests 10w30 for most of us.. I agree he is very knowledgable on this subject..

I think I will go to 2750 and then change..
I may stop by a KMart to see if they have their prices mismarked.
I will opt for 10w30 just for grins.. I would love to use Royal Purple.. but its too much of a hassel at times to find it..
Thanks for your replys!

Someone on LS1.com said they switched from Mobil 1 to Redline and their engine runs smoother now. Now I don't know if I believe that...

Anyone use Redline?

Yeah, I'd be interested in hearing any feedback on Red Line also. The only fluid (except gas) in my 98 Z28 that is not Red Line is the crankcase oil...

psychocabbage;

I believe all Z28's come from the factory with dino oil in them, and when they are sent to SLP for the SS conversion, they change the oil to mobil 1.

In your climate (I live in a warm one too) I would use 10W30, here is a couple of links to consider:

http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...07&prmenbr=361

http://www.oiltown.com/

The latter (oiltown) is a little less expensive.

Hope this helps you out in some way.

SteveC

SteveC, why would you want to use a thinner oil in a hotter climate? becuase isn't 5 the thickest, and 15+ thinnest? which would mean in a really hot place you'd want 5, correct? and thinner oil as you get colder. Or do I have this backwards? I put in 5 becuase my car is only driven during the summer anyway.
