Question Starter Problems

Hi All,

I just got the new motor put in my car, transmission is hooked up, along with everything else needed to drive.

Before all of the drivetrain was hooked up, I could get the motor started, and it runs great. However after I'd run it a bit and turn it off, when I'd go to restart it, it would turn over really slow.

After I got all of the drivetrain hooked up, I put a new starter on it (it also has a new, 1000 cranking amp battery). It seemed to turn over really well, so it was time to drive it.

I drove it about 2 miles and of course, layed into it just a bit. When I got back to the house, I shut the car off. Then I wanted to see what the temperature was, so I cranked it back up, and then the starter got hung up and kept dragging, really slowly. Smoke started coming out of the starter and the power cable started to melt, so I cut the cable real quick before something caught on fire.

Anyone have any ideas before I begin going through starters?

It's got open headers that come out next to the starter, and I wonder if it's a heat issue. It's a really high compression motor, but with the new battery and starter, it seemed to turn over pretty well. Help!!!! I'm SOOO close!!!

Thanks

Take out the starter and the starter cable. Seems to me like the starter was drawing too much power and fried the cable. Replace the cable and take the starter out for testing. Could have been a bad starter.

Heat soak. When a starter gets hot it can bind up...when it doesn't turn the electric motor draws a LOT more current that it normally does and that is what melted the wire. Since it's a higher compression motor anyway, I would recommend a gear-reduction starter and of course a new battery cable. Also get the exhaust hooked up because all that heat isn't helping.
